Prepping checklists for newbies?

Hi All
I am an absolute newbie to prepping and am looking for some beginner resources.

I live on a small island off the coast of Scotland (UK) with two girls. We are not an obvious target for military action, but have a single point of failure in the ferry, which brings all food and resources to the island. If that goes down, we're in trouble.

We have decided that our Crash-Plan is to stay put (our house is very remote - approx 45min drive from the nearest big town), and rely on stockpiles and grown-your-own. We have a small amount of good quality land that we can grow from, as well as a natural spring, plus easy access to beaches for the purposes of fishing and collecting water for desalination.

Is anyone able to recommend a newbie-guide, in the form of book, journal or website, that can offer information on stockpiling, water purifying and defence?

Thanks for your time.

Preppers blueprint by Tess Pennington is a good allround book to start with

Think I got my copy from Amazon

Hi Danu

Have you actually practised any of the things you talk about? Smile

cozietoesie · 16/08/2017 14:43

For example, do you currently cut peat/grow vegetables?

Danu1973 · 16/08/2017 15:00

Hi Cozietoesie.
Yes we do already cut peat and grow veg. We've also just got into a spot of lobster fishing (is that the word - with pot traps), and humane snares to encourage rabbits off the croft.

That's excellent. I reckon you need to iron out any snarls before you need to do it in earnest. (Seaweed is marvellous potato fertiliser by the way.)

Are you a vegetarian household?

cozietoesie · 16/08/2017 15:14

PS - have you thought to keep any livestock? (Eg a few chickens.)

Danu1973 · 16/08/2017 15:26

Cozietoesie.
Yeah, we believe in drilling before it all goes down. :)
Not a vegetarian... but almost. We eat meat once a week.
Got the seaweed angle covered, and we also have access to horse manure (not our clippy-clop, but we take a neighbours mucking-out)

You're better set than most, I reckon. A hard life but do-able.

You already sound very well set up. Some things do spring to mind:

Some chickens,
Breed some rabbits for meat
Learn how to bottle/can your produce.

PS - keep abreast of your First Aid.
