How are you prepping for Brexit?

I know we don't know what will happen in the run up to Brexit or afterwards but in my book things are looking scary.
I have legitimate concerns about some of my contracts (one very large one has already pulled out and left me around £1700 pcm down) and I am scared witless about DP's job.

We are currently trying to cut loose any extra expenditure in our household and decided this morning to sell a couple of tech bits we no longer need for my business, in order to free up some cash. Ideally we would love to be saving a bit more but we have some urgent repair work needed on our home which we can't skip until the financial situation looks a bit more calm.
We are overpaying our mortgage by a small amount each month but are now trying to decide if it might be better to stop that and keep the money to one side incase everything goes tits up.

We have a vintage Airstream which is worth a decent amount of money and we use 2x a month min throughout the year (plus almost the entire summer). The value of it continued to rise during the credit crunch and keeps going up. We are trying to decide if it is worth hanging onto in the long term as an investment (and our only source of holidays) or to sell up.

We always have a decent stockpile of freezer, tinned and home preserved food but now I'm wondering if buying in some large bags of rice and pasta for long term could be useful. We have a tiny kitchen so storage is an issue, although not impossible. Does anyone know of any reliable, waterproof, food grade storage containers for keeping non jarred and tinned food in cellar type environments? Our cellar is a little on the damp side, so we tend to be very careful about what we keep down there, although airtight containers fair well.

I know some people will say this is an over reaction but our family is already feeling the direct impact of the leave vote and we are genuinely worried about the continued impact.

Are you worried? What are you doing to prep?

I am comfortable with my preps for now. I feel my anxiety is relieved and I can get on with life again.

buying a bottle of champagne so when we do leave I can open it and celebrate

CheshireChat · 28/07/2018 21:19

ihatetosay What's the point of coming and gloating on a thread and part of a forum where the exact opposite is being discussed?

It's like going on S&B and complain they talk about make up or on the food boards saying you think cooking is a waste of time...

I intend to have some things in simply because during heavy snows (abroad), the supermarkets had issues restocking and all the cheaper/ value stuff went first and I can't afford to buy to buy much else.

So realistically what happened the people that were better off made savings by buying all the better value things, leaving the people who couldn't afford to do the same with very little options.

Will mains water really stop being pumped in the event of a power outage? If so I’m buying some lifestraws

We always have a month’s worth of food in the house, but I’m tempted to buy a second hand generator too. We got rid of our oil fired Rayburn and switched our heating from oil to electric this year so we’re completely reliant on the national grid.

Toilets are likely to be a bigger problem for you than taps. Concentrate your thinking there.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2018 12:39

As for the toilet question, I'd look into (pardon expression Grin) composting toilets. I'm guessing this would unnerve my household at any start so it would be camping toilet with double bin bags and chemicals to start off.
But longer term (if there is longer term), composting toilet.

As someone who lives in a flat, I bloody hope they get their act in gear as we're a bit limited in options.

Will definitely stock up on food and will make sure we have bottled water just in case as they're the easy bits, but not much I can do about running water- we're under Yorkshire Water so I don't really anticipate issues tbf.

Worst comes to shove, then my mum and 4 yo will be sent back to my home country until things settle. Presuming mum will still want to spend the winter here with Brexit looming Confused.

I know the dates are really short on stuff like this, but since we're hopefully prepping for short rather than long term, then places like approved food or little local equivalents (stack it high in Hull) can be a good way of getting some food on a budget.

I have a good assortment of sauce jars like (Saintsbury's actually) from them as they were being sold 6 for £1. So the tomato and basil is a reasonable base for pizza, pasta or anything similar.

Don't worry to much about "Best Before" dates. Not the same as Yse By - obviously it's up to you where your child is concerned.

CheshireChat · 31/07/2018 21:07

I'll be honest, I mostly use common sense and my nose to check stuff Blush.

Not killed anyone yet! Or even gave them food poisoning.
