Germans told to stockpile

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/08/2016 00:45

Germans are being told to stockpile enough food and water for 10 days, in case of a national emergency.

Sensible or scaremongering.

Any thoughts?

I like to think I am quite prepped but blimey, two whole weeks' supplies for six people? I wouldn't know where to put it all.

cozietoesie · 25/08/2016 17:39

You do what you have to, Lorelei. Smile

BoffinMum · 25/08/2016 17:41

We're near a water source here so we'd actually just have to filter it through tights and then boil it for 10 minutes with a fire made from conveniently located trees in the copse. It would be a faff though.

DH and I did emergency firelighting practice with moss and a Swedish fire lighter the other day and gave up after 20 minutes. I think we'd need to raise our game a bit.

FWIW this is a terrific website for survival stuff. evaq8.co.uk I have lots of things from them and try to confine myself to buying things that are also useful for DofE hikes as well as general domestic emergencies.

BoffinMum · 25/08/2016 17:42

No, the elephant on the thread is actually Russia.

BoffinMum · 25/08/2016 17:43

I think I will stick to 72 hours as a prepping time frame as that corresponds to a nasty storm or local factory explosion.

cozietoesie · 25/08/2016 17:50

Older houses in the UK often have cellars as well, Boffin. It's the newer ones that tend to be tight on space. (Cellars being expensive to build in.)

evaq8.co.uk/12-Tins-Mountain-House-Freeze-Dried-Survival-Food-25-Year-Shelf-Life.html

Probably last us 11 days.
Do they do these at Waitrose? Grin Duchy of Cornwall organic survival rations?

cozietoesie · 25/08/2016 17:57

Dear Goodness - the price!

Some extra tins of what you might ordinarily eat are the best to my mind. If nothing happens, you'll have to rotate them after all. Smile

Lorelei76 · 25/08/2016 18:04

I can't help laughing that when I clicked on that website, the first thing it showed me was some sort of blueberry muffin!!

I am going to have to figure out where to store some kitty litter and hopefully somewhere that my friends won't need to look in or there will be some questions!!

SillyMoomin · 25/08/2016 18:09

I'm not a prepper in general; I have a few tins of sardines and always some fried pasta and tomato tins, but nothing out of the ordinary.

However, am now watching that sodding blackout as recommended upthread and am alternating between being slightly scared; to updating my Tesco order for this weekend to include 50% more tins / waters etc

Aaaargh what have you all done to me?!! DH is going to be furious, we barely have enough space in our cupboards as it is!

DinosaursRoar · 25/08/2016 18:24

I'm not a prepper and have no space, but this has unnerved me...

Will start adding a few more tinned goods to the weekly order to see if we can build up supplies.

Lorelei76 · 25/08/2016 18:54

Silly - fried pasta..?

I haven't watched blackout...

Lorelei76 · 25/08/2016 18:55

sorry my phone posted too soon
the filming of it looks all jumping around and I find that annoying so I can't watch it.

SillyMoomin · 25/08/2016 18:56

Ha. Dried pasta.

SirVixofVixHall · 25/08/2016 19:19

What is Blackout? Is it a drama?

Lorelei76 · 25/08/2016 19:22

sorry Silly, I realised that right after!! lol!

I have been looking at solutions for the bathroom - US sites are talking about quicklime but I don't know what that is in the UK. In fact it makes me think of when someone disposed of a body in Dorian Gray!!

SillyMoomin · 25/08/2016 19:24

sirvix, it's a spoof documentary about britains national grid being hijacked and shutting down. Filmed in a "first person filming" type view

Uses a few facts and figures that are real about our emergency power supplies etc. Freaking TERRIFYING

cozietoesie · 25/08/2016 19:27

SirVix

Both Blackout and American Blackout are on YouTube. Blackout is also available on All4.

Shallishanti · 25/08/2016 19:34

...so....how do you store enough drinking water then?

cozietoesie · 25/08/2016 19:42

Eg bottles, cisterns, tanks and - if there's still pressure - fill buckets and the bath if you have one. And stink - potable water should be for drinking only. (Best not to use it for cooking if you can avoid it.)

cozietoesie · 25/08/2016 19:44

PS - if you're using tanks etc, remember to turn off all heating systems. (In fact, turn off all electrical equipment if that power source is compromised.)

Lorelei76 · 25/08/2016 20:16

I'm wondering what facts and figures are terrifying but given my extreme pessimism they are probably things I already worry about so I won't subject myself to that camera work

I can't be the only person who hates that style... I might try the US version.

Artandco · 25/08/2016 20:22

Last time we had snow warnings my ocado was suddenly full of tinned food. Dh was like wtf is this! Where as I was thinking ' you will be pleased with the 'essential tin of artichokes' later on ( they are admittedly still in the cupboard)

cozietoesie · 25/08/2016 20:34

Yes - that sort of found footage movie isn't to my taste either, really. Still........

cozietoesie · 25/08/2016 20:46

Baked beans may be old hat, Art, but they're a good standby. Smile
