I'm going to sort all the crap out the pantry and stock up. Saw that Blackout programme the other day and it worried me. Dh works on power stations round the country and reckons the UK is on a knife edge when it comes to power....though he reckons any problems would be short term and localised.

Anyway we have a log burner and a load of wood and kindling. Can boil a kettle, heat a saucepan on top of the burner.

Am going to store:

Some water, maybe 20ltrs. Have an outbuilding I can put it in.
A fire starter Flint
Candles
Water purifying tablets

Tinned food......we don't eat lots of tinned or even jarred stuff at all. Tinned tomatos and coconut milk are about the only tinned stuff I eat. Oh and kidney beans. So will have to stock up on kidney beans.

We eat a lot of dry food such as pasta and rice. I guess the problem is they need water for cooking which if you're short on water might be a problem.

We have plenty of wine and also chickens so get eggs.

We have stuff like camping stove, sleeping bags, rucksacks, waterproofs if things went really bad long term.

If it's held remotely, you should be OK for fire or temporary flooding/power loss etc. (But best to keep it up to date though.) I'm just a distrustful type - I might keep photos and documents in the cloud as a belt and braces but I also keep hard copy where possible. Very old family photos are never disposed of for example.

Your call, really. If TEOTWAWKI comes along, then eg birth certificates and family photos from the 20th century are not going to be foremost in your mind.

I like to store dried food also, especially different kinds of beans for the protein. Brown rice stores well. Mix them together and you have a complete protein.

We grow spices and dry them. Helps flavor prepper food.
The LDS church has good info on prepping. I'm not a member but use their knowledge of prepping, as it is quite good.
I also would recommend a basic medical peppers bag. Lots of info on the Internet about what to get for this bag.

Just a few random thought...

I have quite a bit put away in various places, and other bits that I use on a regular basis too.

We have a gas hob and electric oven, so generally manage ok with service interruptions. We also have a gas BBQ outdoors (and a full bottle of gas). And an outdoor log burner that I could knock up a cooking system on if needed. (I also now have the code to the local scout hut, so could access their cooking/camping equipment if I got there ahead of other leaders!!).

In terms of heating indoors, we have gas central heating and a log burner. And the house is well insulated. We also have a drawer with about 10 of those rechargeable handwarmers (you boil them up once they've been used). And a good few hot water bottles, and loads of blankets and rugs.

We use a battery powered radio a lot, and I have plenty of spare batteries. We also have a few power bricks to charge up phones and other devices.

I have a lot of candles - loads of tealights. and holders for them, and a reasonable number of table candles (dinner type) with a few holders, and a decent handful of larger pillar candles, and holders. I also have a couple of windup lanterns, which aren't great but better than nothing, along with 3 headtorches and a decent handful of hand torches. And suitable batteries.

My food supplies are not bad, and I think I could feed the family for at least 2-3 weeks on fresh/frozen stuff, and another few weeks on dried/tinned supplies. Possibly even longer, and certainly much longer before the tea runs out.

And we have plenty of good gear for all weathers. And first aid materials (I am an occupational first aider). And a fund of good common sense generally too. Backpacks for bringing things home, hiking boots, lots of books and board games for entertainment with no power, and lots of friends locally to work together with (our street are pretty good at pulling together in emergencies).
