Placenta abruption at 31 weeks pregnant, success stories of a successful pregnancy after

Hi all I had my first daughter 40 weeks to the day normal delivery all fine. Fast forward last year I gave birth at 31+4 due to placenta abruption. We was in nicu for 6 weeks, She’s just turned 1 and I am currently 10 weeks pregnant.
Has anybody got pregnant so soon after a premature birth and carried full term 37/38 weeks etc without this happening again or another premature birth as I’m terrified to go through that experience again and put another baby through that I just hope it will be okay some hope please🥲thank you

Congratulations! I had an abruption at 31+2 with DTs. I didn’t go to have any more because a) twins and b) there seemed to be no rhyme or reason or medical explanation to why it happened.

hope you get some answers in the positive. Good luck!

I had a debrief with our maternity unit about 18 months after I had my daughter as I wanted to know if a placental abruption was likely to happen again. Mine was at 37 weeks so although a huge surprise and emergency at the time I can’t help with the premature part of your question but I was told that placental abruptions were specific to the pregnancy rather than a likely reoccurrence.

Could you book an appointment to go through your maternity notes and ask any questions you have? I found it very useful (Although I did find out some upsetting details about my daughter’s birth I wasn’t aware of before which I hadn’t anticipated so be prepared).

Good luck with your pregnancy. I hope the maternity unit can provide some reassurance for you.

I think having a birth debrief might be useful too. Congratulations on your PG @Chaarldanx Flowers

I had a placental abruption at 35 weeks with my first. Obviously this made him very slight premature but not really in the grand scheme of things. He was still V poorly though and was in NICU for 2 weeks.

I delivered my second safely with no abruption / issues via a planned section at 37 weeks. He had an uncomplicated birth and we were home less than 24 hours after delivery. Absolutely no complications and a world away from my first delivery.

Was monitored more with 2nd and consultant decided to deliver at 37 weeks but this was a combination of prior abruption, my liver function being poor and declining as well as limited growth etc (although he was born 8lb 2oz and was predicted to be 5lb).

A second pregnancy definitely can be healthy but it did really take it's toll on my mental health as I was, naturally, very worried throughout.

TeaandHobnobs · 08/12/2025 22:45

Mine weren’t as close together as yours, but my first delivery was at 31+5 due to placental abruption… second delivery was induced at 40+5!
I would think it is very hard to predict if an abruption would happen in a subsequent pregnancy, and I would hope you would be consultant led and they would do extra checks on placental blood flow, etc.
I think asking for a debrief from your first delivery would be a good start, or at least speak to your new midwife about your worries. I requested my notes from my first pregnancy so I had them to bolster my request for consultant-led.

stillchasingdereksheppard · 09/12/2025 07:22

I did not need to ask to be consultant led it was a given. My midwife told me at my booking appointment when I was 8 weeks id be consultant led due to extra monitoring required given the history. I honestly found my midwife very reassuring in that she was open about what the risks were and what the monitoring was and laid it all out and we had a very open discussions about how we would manage it during this pregnancy.

It's probably because I was high risk or perhaps just got lucky but the care I had in my second pregnancy was so much better than first time around and I genuinely felt safe.

@Chaarldanxjust wanted to ask how you're doing now?

I also had a placental abruption with my last (third) baby, partial abruption started at 26 weeks, PPROM at 31 weeks and full abruption in labour at 31+3, so I needed an EMCS.

I'm now 19+1 with my 4th and had bleeding at 14 and 18 weeks, which they said was due to cervical ectropion. I'm still having spotting now but heartbeat was fine at triage. I have a cervical length scan on the 30th and my 20 week scan + a uterine Doppler scan on the 31st, so I'm just hoping that all the scans will be ok.

I had an abruption with my first , but the second no issues. It was 6 yrs later though

Chaarldanx · 20/01/2026 20:56

Hi all thank you for your responses I did go over my last labour with the doctor what happened why etc and it seems to be just a sense of waiting and hoping it all goes well this time.
I am been monitored more closely but other than that just a waiting game! I appreciate you all taking the time to respond I completely forgot I made this! X

Hi hope your scan went well if you've already had it xx

I'm 24+3 now and after the 2 bleeds at 14 and 18 weeks I had a 25ml bleed at 23+3. My hospital NICU is only from 27 weeks so I had to stay in a hospital with a level 3 NICU 1 hour away for 2 days, which was really scary as they thought she might be born that night. The bleeding stopped after 24 hours thankfully, they didn't really know where it came from but it didn't feel at all like the abruption last time, so they said probably from the cervix. It's weird though cause it just always happens for no reason.

Yeah definitely it's so worrying, I'm coming up to the time the abruption started happening last time so I'm just watching for signs all the time xx

Toddlertiredp · 28/01/2026 14:02

I had abruption with my first (not premature though). However I carried twins with no abruption in my second pregnancy. Was told it was pregnancy specific, I did take aspirin as prescribed second time round as a precaution though.

Hi I’m so sorry to hear you had to go through that as the thought of such an early birth is so scary but so pleased it managed to stop after 24 hours! How are you doing now so sorry the reply is months later I hope you and baby are well! And that’s exactly how I’m feeling now I’m approaching 29 weeks I’m only 2 weeks off from when it happened so it’s terrifying isn’t it! Xx

That's ok, so happy that your pregnancy is still going well and I hope you get to full term with no problems.

My baby is here! I had bleeds at 14, 18, 23, 25, 28 and 29 weeks. At 30+1 I had another bleed but it was more like... watery? Triage did a PROM test to check for waters having broken and it was positive. Everyone thought it might have been a false positive cause I had no leaking of waters at all until 24 hours after the positive test. Thankfully they gave me steroid injections anyway. They thought the waters could probably have broken days or even weeks earlier and just have been leaking so slowly that I never noticed.

At 30+3 baby had 3 failed CTGs and completely stopped moving and my belly was really hurting so they thought it was chorioamnionitis. My blood tests also came back positive for infection. They were discussing doing an EMCS when her heart rate suddenly went down loads so it became a category 1 EMCS. After they did it they said everything looked infected. She's been in NICU for a week now and after the first 2 days she's being doing really well.

So yeah I thankfully didn't have an abruption again but instead got an infection. 100% never having any more children cause they said my waters would most likely break preterm again.

Hope you have a much more positive outcome!
