My daughter was premature, 6 weeks early 3lb 10oz.

been tiny from day dot, never been bothered until now about comments on her size, till now she's 17 months and so tiny she's still in 9-12 months.
she can't walk yet either keeps standing up by herself for a few seconds that's it and at her childminders and my friends baby's are all just turning 1 and huge or walking already.
it's really getting me down now. :( pls
help anyone had anything similar and they have caught up

I’ve got the opposite, my first baby was so big he was born 90th C/I and was in 9-12 at 6 MO. He’s now 2 and in 4-5 yrs clothing. The problem is, he’s so big people think he’s a lot older than he is. He looks about 6-7 yo. So they expect him to behave more; listen more,DO more and he doesn’t understand.

My point being; you could have it the opposite end of the spectrum and still have worries for the above. I wouldn’t be concerned about her weight, if she is healthy and continually putting on weight. Do u get her weighed? Is her weight at an upward, normal weight? What was said at her 1 yr review? (Assuming ur in the UK).

All babies are different, and no two are the same. My 2 YO walked quite late, he was about 14mo where my now baby (1 yo) started walking at 9 months. 17 months is quite late to not be able to stand or walk, what did your health visitor say? Are they meeting their other milestones ? Does she talk/ babble etc?

She was born 6 weeks early so corrected she would be 16 months she stands for a few seconds on her own and she walks with hands or furniture but isn't taking steps on her own.

My daughter was 10 weeks early. She didn’t walk until 20 months and has always been small for her age. She is now 10 years old and is the height of an 8 year old. Her friends tower over her but it doesn’t bother her at all.
as my mum used to say to me
‘all good things come in small packages’

DS1 was 6 weeks prem, and tiny. We had all the comments about how small he was, even one who asked if I was sure he was 1 as he was so small he couldn’t possibly be more than 6 months old - like I’m going to forget 🙄. anyone persistently making comments got told the paediatrician was happy with how he was growing so what’s the problem.

he’s 13 now, and while he’s smaller than most of his friends, he’s now within normal height range for his age. He was bothered about it, but now he just owns it, and understands that he’s had to do more growing to catch up and fall within height range appropriate for his age. He may never be tall - we are a family of mostly shorties - but like I’ve told him what does it matter? When people tell him he’s short now he just says “thanks, would you like me to comment on your appearance now?”
People just talk shit, and like to make comments on how big babies are. The only thing you can control is how you respond.

My son’s friend at primary school was petite and my son was tall for his age at the time so all sorts of comments used to be made both way about their relative sizes. I just used to say they were the perfect (insert name) size.

My other son had global delay and further speech delay on top. He was born at 37 weeks so not officially premature but he looked premature compared to my other kids and labour started because my waters burst so it felt to me like he came early. At 18 months he could cruise and would take a couple of steps if he was distracted but he didn’t choose to walk until he was about 21 months. We did get him checked out at around 18 months by child physio and paediatrician as they would expect independent walking by 18 months- but, for him, it was a case of he could walk but chose not to yet. He caught up by secondary school although he does have dyslexia.

My girls 28 months old and not yet walking, she can’t stand solo. She was 3 months premature but had no major issues in nicu.

She has global development delay and we are awaiting an mri/ genetic testing to rule anything else out.

Also, we’re still in 9-12 month clothes which are still a bit big on her.

Mine was 3 months early and tiny at one years old. She didn’t walk until about 18 months. They should catch up when they are two- she is now and very tall for her age! She just shot up all of a sudden. I generally just burst into tears when someone said she was tiny, that soon shut them up!

Karatema · 08/10/2025 11:23

My DS was 5 weeks early. He was smaller than his peers, including the girls, until he was 15 and then shot up - he’s 6’2”!

Please don’t worry, until he was 8 he was lagging behind all the children in his age group i.e. walking, talking, eating by himself; you name it he was at least 6 months behind all those markers. DC do catch up but it takes time. I had a wonderful GP surgery who reassured me he was a healthy and happy lad who would be fine 😀

Thankyou for the comments everyone, I've taken her to the health visitor this morning who have weighed her and measured her length. Although she's small she's proportionate and she's staying on the line she's always been on, so she's growing and she's healthy. And the health visitor even said so now you can go and tell all those people commenting to basically shove it, in a polite way. I can now sort of brush the comments off for abit now and be assured that's she a tiny little princess but healthy xx
