Baby coming at 36+5

I've been in the hospital for 1 week due to bleeding from a low lying placenta. My baby will be delivered by c section tomorrow at 36+5. I'm wondering if anyone can share their experiences of babies around the same gestation and whether/how long they needed oxygen or other support. I know it's almost term but I feel nervous (only about him being well) and I'm trying to wrap my head around the possibilities.

perhaps you could tell them that’s what you’re worried about, as it may be possible? When I had my twins although I didn’t have them on me immediately after they came out, I was able to have them both skin to skin on me in the recovery room next door straight after the surgery so it didn’t feel like long after at all.
An elective CS is usually a very different experience to an EMCS, I found it a really calm experience and you’re able to communicate with the staff, hopefully this will be same for you and you’ll be able to hold him soon. Good luck looking forward to hearing your happy news 😊

Both my boys were born premature DS1 at 34 weeks & DS2 at 35 weeks, DS1 did have a NICU stay due to size & establishing feeding, he was slow to start but we discovered with his heel prick test & further tests that he was born with hypothyroidism & started his meds at 4 days old he was home a week later & is 7 now,DS 2 was born at 7lbs & we were home 24 hours after he was born, neither needed oxygen & DS1 had slight Jaundice but needed no treatment & I got to hold both immediately even though DS1 was going to NICU. Good luck with everything & congratulations on baby 🍼

I had a baby at around that gestation, also by c section. Baby was born at 5lb, but was absolutely fine and didn’t need any oxygen. We were home after 2 days (would have been home the following day but for their low birth weight). I was in longer with their sibling who was born at 39 weeks, they needed SCBU support.

Hope you're in your baby bubble ❤️

The birth happened yesterday and everything went really well, there were no complications for baby or me that were immediately obvious. He came out crying loudly, breathing well and weighing 6lbs 10 oz. I didn't have any unusual bleeding and it was all managed in a very relaxed way. I was able to do skin to skin very soon after he was brought out, which was lovely.

We weren't sent to SBCU but are in a transitional room on the post natal ward, so getting special extra care. My baby has lost a little more weight than they'd like and now has some jaundice. We'll probably be staying for 4-5 more days.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!

Hi everyone. We spent 4 nights in the transitional care area of the postnatal ward and now have been discharged home. Baby is still struggling to put on weight. He lost 11% of birth weight and I've been feeding him on a 3 hourly cycle, breastfeeding first and then a top up of formula or pumped milk. So far it doesn't seem to be working. He's so sleepy that every feed is really tricky. We usually don't get all the milk in and his weight is just staying the same. But he's alert a lot of the time between sleeps, he is making lots of dirty nappies and is breastfeeding well. Anyone has a similar experience? How long did it take to move forward with weight gain?

Hi @WolfMother326 , Glad to hear you are home. I didn't have that problem with mine, but there were lots of little ways in which (compared to my older two) they seemed to take a bit longer to reach milestones. I'm sure once the breastfeeding is more established he'll start to pile on the weight. It's still very early days ❤️

Hi, mine came on her own at 36+6.
She was very sleepy and feeding every 3h did not work really well bcs she had jaundice as well.
I did put her next to me in bed so she had head to hand/armpit (yes bizarre) skin to skin bcs it was winter.
She was getting much more alert simply bcs I woke her up every now and then when I neede to pee, roll, get food etc.
She really liked it, slept in my lap a lot and ate better. That was only thing that worked for us.
Also, it gives you time to just chill and let others do things ;)
