Hello,

my baby was born at 36+3, he is now 10 weeks and 4 days old and still isn’t smiling.. his corrected age is 7 weeks today, is this normal or should I be concerned of a potential developmental delay?

thank you

Pretty normal for a prem baby to take a bit longer even on adjusted age, as they have a lot of catching up to do with weight gain, feeding, growing etc. You'll see that first smile very soon.

I think it's normal OP ( but of course check with your health professionals if you're worried.) My lad arrived early at 35 weeks and I can remember getting so upset he wasn't smiling or even looking at me half of the time. He caught up - and is a strapping 14 year old now.

My daughter wasn't prem but she was slow to smile. It was only when she still wasn't smiling at 17 weeks that the HV was concerned. It was first raised at 8-9weeks. There is quite a broad range for meeting milestones even without factoring in prematurity. For my daughter is was linked to under treated reflux and undiagnosed food allergies. She basically wasn't smiling because she had no reason to smile. A week on adequate meds and me going dairy free she started smiling and responding to noises which was another aspect of her development which was a bit behind.
