So my twins was 8weeks early and they turned 4 months yesterday today I see some baby pouches 4months + what’s everyone’s thoughts about giving them a little bit ? I got one pouch of banana and coconut should I give them a little bit or wait till they 5 months and try them on porridge?

Absolutely not. Weaning is recommended from 6 months for full term babies - one of the signs of being ready to wean is 6 months.

You should go by their adjusted age, which is only 2 months old. They are not ready.

You see food being marketed from 4+ months because businesses don’t give a shit that your baby’s gut and digestive system is not ready for food yet and are trying to make money.

I would only wean early on medical advice. Wait until they are meeting all of the milestone eg sitting independently, good head control, no tongue thrust reflex. For mine this was at 6 months, some are a bit later.

Personally no, I wouldn’t give anything to a baby under 6 months. I waited until my baby was confident sitting and was showing a genuine interest in food. I also started very slowly and paced it at what was right for her and us.
I have one friend who weaned early based on medical advice but a dietician provided info on what to start with and the speed of progression.

It's so much easier FF/BF, unless you've been told to wean earlier then don't. Even if there were benefits to doing so (which there aren't) I wouldn't have done it earlier. Started with both of mine at 6 months and I'd say it took until 8 months until they were actually eating anything (I did BLW). You've got enough years of stressing out about food.

Thanks everyone glad it was only 75p so not worried about binning it

I agree! Costa few weeks of weaning are painful

For 4 months my boys are very forward they can hold their heads up and they are starting to sit up a bit but with me behind them it’s like as soon as they hear the lid for their milk coming off they know it’s bottle time but that pouch went straight in the bin about 5mins ago

It doesn't need to be binned, it'll keep a few months.

Have a look at Solid Starts website and Instagram, absolutely invaluable evidence-based advice and resources about weaning.

Weaning at 4 months is time consuming and is likely to make their sleep worse.

Your babies are only really 2 months old though. I think you've made the right decision on binning the pouches Wink

You've made the right call op, and frankly weaning twins is hard work 🤣 so I'd reassess at between 6 months actual and 6 months adjusted

Agree with all of the above. Weaning is a nightmare. I delayed it till my twins were 8 months (6 months corrected). And until about 10-12 months they dont cut down the milk feeds so you are just doing double the work! Mealtimes are still chaotic and stressful at 17 months!

@ExplodingSmittens sorry that didn’t even make sense to me lol my boys are on nutriprem 2 but it don’t seem to be filling them up as much now also spoke to the nurse when they had their last jabs and she said that I could give them baby rice every now and then to help fill them up

Are your babies 4 months actual age or 4 months corrected age ie 6 months actual age?

The advice for prem babies is to wean around 6-8 months actual age depending on their development.

The recommendation would usually be to start weaning at 6 months actual age as long as they are growing well and can swallow safely, don’t still have a strong tongue thrust or allergies for example.

Baby rice is not great nutritionally so I’d be hesitant to replace milk with baby rice. Porridge better IMO especially if made with formula so you’re not reducing their milk intake iyswim.

@minipie their fours months but two months prem. Nurse said that they are the weight or a baby that would of been full term at 4 months old so really good

Ah ok so they are 4 months actual? In which case yes I’d wait a couple of months before weaning definitely. The gut is one of the last bits to mature for prem babies so you don’t want to overload it. These days even full term babies don’t get weaned at 4 months unless major reflux or something

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 19/11/2023 09:57

Ah so they're only 2 months? The current advice for full term babies is 6 months. Do they see a Paediatrician for check ups at all? I'd ask them what their thoughts are Wink

My twins were a month early and I started on porridge 4months from birth, just a small amount.
As yours were two months early I’m thinking only add porridge to the diet if they are waking more or seem more unsettled. If now wait another month.

As an aside Suggest steaming fruit and veg and blending instead of pouches. It means they get the real flavour of the food and it costs pennies not £££s.

I should say the advice at the time was start solids at 4months but my health visitor told us to see if they became unsettled indicating the need from 4months.

That’s really good and porridge is so good for them. Mine still have it every day and they’ll be 20 soon
Sounds like you have it all well organised. I’d definitely get a blender though and blend them some fruit and veg, to get them used to it add some porridge in.
You can store extras by freezing cubes in an ice cube tray

Good luck!
