Prem baby clothes

Suddenly facing the prospect of delivering at 30w and around 3lbs.
Midwife has suggested getting some baby clothes in smaller sizes - the smallest I’d bought already was 5lbs - but aside from the M&S 3lb/4lb options I’m not sure what else there is? Every other brand seems to consider premature or tiny baby as 5 or 6lbs! I know at especially 3lb she’ll likely be fine in just a nappy and blanket in NICU, but I would like to have something she can wear.

If it’s more about having some nice things for her to wear rather than actually practically needing clothes could you or a family member knit her some little hats? Hats in preemie sizes are pretty quick to make.

Little Mouse have loads in teeny sizes.

tb4122 · 18/11/2022 17:14

Asda do prem clothes, they have options up to 3lbs, up to 4lbs and up to 5lbs. Hope all goes ok with your little one.

Needmorelego · 18/11/2022 17:20

Sainsbury's do tiny baby clothes. That's the actual size name 'Tiny Baby'. I think the come in 3lbs and 4lbs.
Hope all goes well 🙂

COL1N · 18/11/2022 17:20

Yes I second Asda, plus you can get preemie nappies for free from Asda pharmacies x

Santagiveyoursackawash · 18/11/2022 17:23

Ds was 4.12.Asda do tinier than that stuff!

Amber17 · 18/11/2022 18:10

Never thought to check ASDA! Thank you - looks like there’s one with Click & Collect near the hospital so even better.

@TeaAndJaffacakes I was partway through knitting a blanket for her and contemplating just casting off whichever row I reach when she arrives as it’ll probably be the perfect size for her, albeit half the size I intended!

Don't buy anything until you know when they're allowed to start wearing clothes. Many prems don't wear clothes for a number of weeks. Then look at SuperDinky on Instagram. Good luck from an ex prem mum x

MistyRock · 18/11/2022 18:16

Also when my son was born the hospital allocated hats according to babies size and it was a special one to hold the ventilator or CPAP tubes.

allthingspinkandpretty · 18/11/2022 18:19

If born early they don't usually wear anything for a little bit. I had my first in nicu for several weeks. We got things from little mouse and also now I think Sainsbury’s have a line with the charity bliss who support prem birth xx

Tronkmanton · 18/11/2022 18:21

Boots do lovely premmie clothes but like people said they don’t wear clothes for a while so might be best to wait and see. Good luck x

Flapjack637 · 18/11/2022 18:54

DD was 2lb some years ago now. Asda did 2lb plus preemie clothing then so I’m sure there’s much more choice now.
The NICU may also sell cardigans and hats for a donation.
Good luck OP. It can be a hell of a ride.

Honestly clothes for little premies are more trouble than they're worth - they're hard to put on around the wires and things, they get in the way, and they're unnecessary anyway because incubator. In fact I was forbidden from dressing DD at all till they started weaning her off the incubator.

The "tiny baby" size fit DD well at that point. I'd recommend getting stuff that buttons down the front, even for the vests, as getting stuff on and off over their heads with wires and tubes in the way is tough.

fancyfrogs · 23/11/2022 22:02

M&S, Sainsbury's and Asda. All have Velcro around the sides/shoulders to allow you to dress them without going over head and getting in the way of oxygen or feeding tubes etc.
hope you're doing ok x
