Preemie baby not smiling

Hi everyone, my baby boy was born at 31 weeks and 3 days. actual age 13 weeks and 3 days and 5 weeks corrected and still isn't smiling? Just wondering whether anyone can shed any light on what timeline we would be roughly looking at as seen a lot on the internet about hearing/sight issues. Am I being impatient/dramatic or should I speak with consultant? I know all babies are different

Smiling normally happens between 6 & 8 weeks, so going by your baby's corrected age, you've about another 3 weeks before you're out of the 'normal' bracket. Have you any other reason to be concerned about their hearing or sight?

@PutYourShoesOnWereLate no other reason to be concerned. Just myself probably being a little anxious/impatient. I have a lot of friends who have had babies after my son and I can't help but compare although I shouldn't!

My youngest was born at 35 weeks and we had no smile till about 13ish weeks, so he probably has a few more weeks yet,

Term DD waited ages to smile, around 9 weeks I think. Very annoying! But so I think your little one is just right!

Flowerfairy101 · 14/10/2022 15:54

DD was born at 34 weeks and smiled probably at 12 or 13 weeks.

Dts were born at 31 weeks, I convinced myself one of them had CP because her arm looked 'funny'. I tortured myself over it. She didn't have CP.

I think it's very normal when you've had a preemie to worry to the nth degree about everything! You're still within realms of 'normal' so try not to worry.

Mine was born at 36 weeks and I had the odd smile from her from 4 weeks but at 10 weeks, so 6 weeks if she'd been born at 40 weeks, it was like she suddenly knew exactly what she was doing and was all of a sudden full of smiles.

Yes with mine I’ve found that smiling seems to have happened at around 6/7 weeks corrected age! So try not to worry as at only 5 weeks corrected it’s still early :)

DS was a 30 weeker - he smiled at 6 weeks corrected. My only advice is stop comparing. As the saying goes, comparison is the thief of joy!
In my experience, premies do things in own timeline and a 30/31 week baby will take until 3 years old to catch up in some cases. It’s a long road. Enjoy all those lovely tiny baby cuddles
