Anyone have a baby born 5 weeks premature and if so what is their development like at 2 years old? My son is turning 2 next month and he has no words yet and is behind in a lot of areas. My dh keeps saying it's because he was premature but I feel like this is just an excuse

5 weeks premmie here. He could speak sentences by 2. Words by 1. They always say correct for the number of weeks a child is premmie and by 2 your child should have words.

Have you had your 2 year review with your HV? If not I would contact them asap to get an appointment in. Early intervention can be incredibly helpful.

5 weeks isn't exceptionally early, and the delay does seem more than one would expect. Have you spoken to the HV?

Our DD was born at 35+2. Almost 4 years now. She seems to need more cuddles than other children and still wakes during the night. Trouble getting to sleep/self settle basically.
In other areas no issues at all or even more advanced than her peers.
If you have doubts I would seek professional advice.

Sorry OP butt it does sound like he has a delay. Don't panic as delays are common and usually overcome with time and perhaps some speech therapy. How is his understanding when you talk to him? Does he follow instructions, etc?

For comparison my DD was born at 33+1 and is now 22 months. She was slightly behind to acquire words but only slower than average, not classed as delayed, and her understanding was actually advanced. She's now coming on hugely and seems to pick up new words every day, though no sentences yet.

Both my sons were 5 weeks premature & with my first I was constantly worried about delays etc,he was great with everything except speech I felt he was behind,I said this to my health nurse (Ireland) at our 2 year check & she thought I was being a bit ahead of myself, she said every child develops differently just because one child is doing something doesn't mean it's what's right for all children,I asked to be seen by speech therapy,we were & she said h was a little behind but nothing major,I did work with him & in no time he was chatting away, can't shut him up now. My now 2 year old is the same so I'm doing what I did with my first & hoping it comes along like it did last time

@Fridaysgirl17 my health visitor won't see him for another 5 months which is frustrating as I just want some advice to help him. Are you able to let me know what you did in order to help his speech please?

A relative of mine was 5 weeks premature. I'm not sure if it was connected but he was a very slow talker. He now has a PhD from Oxford if it's any reassurance.

Yes no problems at all our speech therapist told me to talk to him non stop like when making breakfast, explain every step,it sounds tedious but it was great for him,I used some flash cards I got ones with the letter & words & even if he couldn't get the letter the word he could say & like tree & then if we were out I'd show him the tree & tried to give him a visual. Out on walks I pointed things out all the time, car, bus, house etc. & If he got something wrong our therapist said just correct it,every time, like for example if he said brekkie I'd say breakfast or pork for fork I'd just say fork, not a big deal made & I had to relax with it as I was driving myself crazy so the walks etc made it more fun & not so hard. I'll look back & see if there was anything else & let you know too

My dc was 4 weeks early. I noticed around 2 he wasn't taking. He spent 3 years or so in a speech and language unit. It may be nothing tomworry about with your dc. My advice would be speak to your health visitor/GP if you're worried. Early intervention will help of there are any problems. Plus waiting lists are long so get the referrals in asap. My dc is nearly 11, speaking and back in main stream now.
