Bottle feeding

Hi,

I have twin girls born 35+3 weeks. They are now a month old yesterday.

The problem we face is that with bottle feeding there is a lot of milk spilling on the corners of the mouth sometimes even from the middle. I have tried paced feeding but that has not helped.

I have spoke with the midwife and HV many times about the drenched muslins bibs etc but because they put on weight they don't seem concerned. They don't put on weight in every checkup but when they come back to weigh them they seem to have put on some weight.

After a feeding session the bibs are drenched so they aren't taking the full feed but is this normal?

Sometime I watch videos on YT and newborns take the bottle really well and dont dribble milk. Is this just because they were born premature?

FTM here and Ive just been finding everything so hard and with the many different opinions from professionals I don't know who to listen to!

We are using TT bottles teat size 1.

Any advice or tips I would appreciate. Thanks

Have you tried different brands in terms of bottles/teats? Some babies get on better with different shapes/styles. Sorry I'm not of more help! Congratulations aswell, om sure you're doing a great job x

@whatdodos I tried Dr Browns Premature bottle but one twin found it very tiring and fell asleep during feeding. I think that was far too slow.

My DD was born at 36 weeks (but very small at 1.61kg) and I found TT bottles horrible; same thing would happen as your twins.. the NICU told me preemies don’t tend to do well with TT bottles so I switched to Nuk which was better.

LYSHB · 20/03/2022 22:13

We had a hard time finding the right bottles but NUK were the idea ones for our preemie.

Can I ask if they've been checked for tongue tie?

RandomMess · 20/03/2022 22:26

I was going to ask about tongue tie too

@Vicky1989x @LYSHB thank you I will look into NUK bottles. The girls did not spend anytime in NICU as I think they would have better information on teats and bottles.

@CanIJustHaveAWord @RandomMess whenever I have mentioned about the dribbling no midwife or HV seems much concerned and hasn't mentioned anything about tongue tie but maybe because they have been putting on weight.

I'd def ask for them to be checked for tongue tie. If you Google it, you might be able to see if it looks likely

Also recommend the Nuk bottles

Yes often bottle fed babies get missed for tongue tie if they are gaining weight. From what you've said I would say that it's a very strong possibility that tongue tie is the issue.
What they might say is 'yes, they do but as they are bottle fed it doesn't matter'
It absolutely does and they should be referred to have it sorted asap.
