Was your premature baby delayed?

Victoriabythesea · 27/04/2021 09:01

DD was 10 weeks early,, spent 6 weeks 4 days in NICU, had an easy time and got out without too many issues.. some people say premature babies hit targets at there actual age and some say they get them at corrected age.
What about you?? When did your premature baby sit and crawl and walk and talk?

I had twins born 12 weeks early, 8 and 11 weeks of n hospital but like yours they did ok with no major health issues other than reflux.

Both have been different, sometimes they've hit milestones (one with rolling/walking but the other twin was about 2/3 months behind), sometimes been delayed (weaning took forever with both, start at 6 months, follow Bliss advice) and sometimes ahead (both are advanced talkers although one twin is 1 or 2 months ahead of the other. They're toddlers now and seem fine. I stopped looking at all the websites telling me what they should be doing a while ago as it just made me anxious. As long as they're improving, even if it's slowly, they're going in the right direction. All babies are different but if there's been no major issues up to now you're probably ok. Don't stress if there's an issue you'll know xxx

Sometimes they do things by corrected age and others by actual age. They're all different, as you get to know your baby you'll develop an idea of which is the best to use for each stage. Your HV and consultant will help with this. As will nursery when LO gets there 💐 I know how stressful it is but try not to get too hung up on it. I have one twin who learns slowly and surely. Every day he tries and gets a little bit better at something till he masters it. The other twin doesn't even try to do things. He didn't roll until about 12/13 months FFS, I was going batty. Especially as his brother did it about 3 months before. I was convinced something was wrong with him. He learns leaps though. One minute he can't do something and about an hour later he's mastered it. Bloody kids!!!

Mine were 7 weeks early and did most things at their corrected age. By the time they were 2, apart from being teeny, they'd pretty much caught up.

My son was born 9 weeks early and was slightly delayed with turning over, smiling and crawling but by the time he was two he’d completely caught up. He’s 18 now, a strapping 6’2 and doing his A’levels (and off to uni in Sept, all being well). Just thought you’d like to know that slight delays usually pan out!

My 33-weeker is definitely delayed by birth age but on target for corrected.

My DD was born at 32 weeks; she smiled at 14 weeks so 6 weeks after her due date. She rolled at 6 months, crawled at 8 months and walked at 14 months which I would say is a fairly normal for a full term baby. She was late to sit up unaided but I think that was because once she moved she wanted to be on the go. She was a little late to speak but more by about 2-3 months and not to the extent she needed any support. I think we were very lucky from what I’ve seen though

I have a 31+4 weeker, like pp above me she smiled at 14 weeks, so 6 weeks after her due date which is the exact same time they're "supposed" to smile.
Crawling she was well over 1 so pretty delayed there and again walking she was delayed by a few months (from her actual age not just corrected age). She was going to see a physio but this was mid lockdown so she just kinda sorted herself out by being desperate to chase after her big sister! speech again, a good few months delayed by her actual age.
And she is absolutely miniscule, she wears 12-18 months and has just gone into 18-24 in a few things ...and she's coming up 3!
However with development now... You wouldn't have a clue that she was preemie at all. She's caught up amazingly!
We were told when we were in NICU to add 6 months onto (again actual age not corrected so that's even longer !!)any "milestones" and even then if she didn't achieve them at that point it still wouldn't be a major worry, just contact the HV and get them to come and check them over and keep an eye for if the delay continued past the 6 months .

33 weeker - later end of normal for motor skill milestones (like walking, crawling etc).
Early talker and bloody good talker and has not shut up since.

SouthernComforts · 16/05/2021 12:52

My 28 weeker was sitting at 13 months and walking at 18 months.

elliejjtiny · 21/05/2021 01:00

My 35 weeker sat up at 16 months and walked at nearly 3 years. He has moderate learning difficulties and is doing well with reading but can't write his name yet aged nearly 8 years.
