Placenta sent off for testing?

Hi everyone! 🥰 Fetal Medicine called me today to say they sent my placenta off for testing (wasn’t aware) and they’re offering me some further tests to check whether there could have been a growth restriction or a potential for it to happen in future pregnancies. The midwife said the tests weren’t urgent and that if I did have another baby then I could be prescribed a low level of aspirin. Has anyone had experience of this? Is it anything to worry about? What are the tests?

DS was born at 36+2 and had gastroschisis.

No just bumping for you.
Congratulations on your DS. How are you both?

Hi, I've had something similar, I've had two premature babies, my last was induced due to my placenta not working and her being small (it was something to do with the blood flow), my midwife told me they send your placenta off but you won't know the results they will just go on your file for next time, she also mentioned about the aspirin but apparently this wasn't brought in till I was halfway through my last pregnancy, it is a bit annoying that they don't give you the results as I think this would influence whether or not I would have another!

I had my placenta tested, but for a different issue. It took ages to come back but I did get a letter about it from the consultant, even though the problem couldn’t affect future pregnancies.

I’d suggest phoning your GP in 3-6 months, or when COVID calms down, and asking them to check your file and get back to you.

Sadly lost my first pregnancy due to IUGR (placenta not supplying enough blood to baby, causing growth restriction). They sent my placenta off but I was told that the results very rarely shed any light onto why it happened. It was detected at 20weeks and lost baby at 24weeks.
For my next pregnancy I was given Asprin from the start, this was to prevent infection within the placenta (just incase this was cause of last, not because it was the cause). Unfortunately I did get IUGR again with 2nd pregnancy but it didn't start as early as with first (had more regular scans but was not detected until 27weeks) meaning baby grew large enough to make c-section worth it at 30weeks.
DS spents 6wks in NICU then came home, he is now 9months old and is very healthy.

Are you at a teaching or research hospital ? We were and every test they could do - as well as some new trial ones- we're done and I had relatively straightforward pregnancies
