Still use "corrected" age for babies born at 35+6?

I've got twins born at 35+6, both over 5lbs and in seemingly good health. They're 5 months old now and do seem a bit slow on the development front. I keep reminding myself that they were a month early, but then 38 weeks is considered full term isn't it? So am I being generous by thinking that they're fine to be around a month behind? Or were they not really premature enough to go by this? Think I am just getting a bit paranoid because they meet a couple of the risk factors for cerebral palsy.

My baby was born at 34 weeks and I was told he wouldn’t catch up until 12 months, so I think at 5 months you’re still ok. What are the CP signs?

Fruitshootloop · 06/08/2020 12:08

And the doctors definitely use 40 weeks as full term, not 38.

Thanks @Fruitshootloop. I meant they have a couple of risk factors for CP - the slight prematurity, being twins and being slightly low birth weight. They are great with their dexterity and limb strength, but are a bit laggy when I pull them to sitting and seem to have very little core strength. I'm not sure if I need to worry or not - hopefully not quite yet.

5 months is very little, however if you would like reassurance or support do mention to health visitor. Are they under a paediatrician or were they completely discharged?

NameChangeEveryDay · 06/08/2020 14:06

They were completely discharged, actually I'm really disappointed in the lack of input since bringing them home... I know there's a pandemic on, but they were kept in because of how much weight they lost and I'm surprised that nobody is concerned that they're on track since being discharged. Even 6 week check didn't happen. But I digress! Health visitor is on leave this week but I will call again next week and see what she says.

My DTs were born at 36+5 and the HV and GP never used their corrected age. They were a little behind on a couple of milestones in the early months and I used their corrected age to basically reassure myself, and sure enough by the time it rolled round they were hitting the milestone. They are now 2.5 and I don’t really think about it anymore, they’re basically like any other child their age except obviously there’s two of them!

If you’re concerned I’d definitely speak to your HV, especially if they’ve not hit their milestones by their corrected age.

I was told to use adjusted age by all of my health advisors and that not doing so would stress me out and give me unreasonable expectations of my baby.

I was looking through my Ds baby book today and she sat up on her own when she was 6 mo, she was 5.5 weeks early. She's 17mo now and doing great x
