Cervix closed at 7mm, any hope or stories?

Hi,

I am looking for any stories from people who went through something similar!
I had my 20 week scan today and baby is fine, cute little girl and all measurements etc are great, however I was advised that my cervix is only 7mm closed and dr came in and mentioned that for it to be good news it has to be 20mm or more, I'm waiting for blood results to see if there are any infections , if not, we might be able to have progesterone shots to prevent pre term labour so I'm holding onto that little bit of hope but also am making peace with the fact that it may not work out! I've had back pains and pressure in my uterus for a week with no bleeding and midwives said it's nothing to worry about but apparently those were symptoms!
Anyway, does anyone know if there is any chance of baby girl holding out till at least viability week?
I feel numb and scared and obviously want to have her healthy but I know there is nothing I could have done to prevent this.

Hi
Sorry to hear you are going through this. Progesterone is one school of thought but did your Dr also give you the option of putting in an emergency stitch? Even at 7mm - and I’m assuming from your post, that you’re 23 weeks - some hospitals / Drs would do this to try and prevent imminent pre term labour.
If you head over to the Incompetent Cervix UK group on Facebook (then from there go on to the Pregnancy section), there are a wonderful group of supportive women all going through - or have been through - similar. Some may have had had preventative but others have had emergency stitches put in. Whilst it may not have worked for all, others have got to term / further, with an emergency stitch or just on progesterone. But the women on there offer good advice and share experiences, which is what you’re looking for.
I would really push for an emergency stitch if you can, they have been known to work even with little cervix length. In the meantime, Over the next few days, especially, try and keep pressure off your cervix. In the U.K. they don’t favour full bed rest any more due to the risk of blood clots - but I would say anything you can do to keep your legs elevated and resting up as much as you can will help and as close as you can do to bed rest may help to get you to 24 weeks.
It’s nothing you have done and actually it’s miraculous that your doctors even picked up on it on your scan, as measuring cervix length at your 20 week scan is not the norm...
Do check out the FB group ad good luck

@Newatthismummy
Thank you for your response! I have the the op for the stitch in a few hours . They don't know if my cervix is that short anyway or if something happened so it's all precautionary! I am also taking progesterone pessaries as I read so much about them and hope they will help. It's a weird situation because everything looks fine, they just want to prevent pre term labor so it could all be unnecessary operation-wise, however, dr said it could also be 50/50 and hopefully stitch should take me to 24 weeks if there was an issue.

That’s great news - I’m pleased they have acted so quickly! It should definitely help!

Hi
I just wondered how you are getting on? I have no experience with your cervix story but am experience early labour signs at 26 weeks with a closed cervix so wanted to check in x

@Fox2020
I had my daughter at 27+4, the stitch did it's job but due to her cord pressing on her head, the Dr's felt it was after her being out than in.
I was given steroid injections a week prior to her unexpected delivery which help mature their lungs before they arrive as well as magnesium a few hours before her birth.
We are all doing well and she will be in NICU for a few months until her due date.
Wishing you the best of luck and ask as many questions to the Dr's as you need x
