Hi,
My we've been told that my nephew (born at 32.6 weeks) has a stomach infection... he has green stuff in his tummy and has been gurgling.... he's being transferred to a different hospital.... please does anyone know anything about what this means!? I'm so so worried

Thankyou

If he’s vomiting green stuff that may be bile. It can be there for several reasons, and if they’re talking about infection in could be necrotising enterocolitis which premature babies are susceptible too. It can be very serious, so it’s good they’ve recognised possible signs and are getting prompt treatment. I’m so sorry that you’re having such a worrying time.

That's what I've read online, I don't know if he's vomiting it, but they said they found it in his stomach... but I guess he must be vomiting... he's also constantly bubbling up saliva bubbles too

Newborns can have lots of saliva bubbles because of the fluid they need to get rid of, especially if born by caesarean, so without seeing how much that isn’t necessarily abnormal. It may be that they’ve found the green stuff in his stomach when they’ve aspirated when putting an NG tube in rather than vomit ... in a term baby it can be that they’ve swallowed meconium before being born which wouldn’t be a problem, but at 33 weeks that probably wasn’t the case. Any signs of necrotising enterocolitis are taken very seriously, so the hospital could just be being very cautious.

Thankyou for replying, he was born by c section, there was no mention of mechonium at all, and it seems like there's a lot of the bubbling

It's so so worrying, I hope to god it's not NEC because I've read some extremely scary things

As far as I know excessive fluid secretions are associated with a lung problem rather than stomach. It’s possible to have early onset pneumonia depending on the reason he was born early. I hope you get some answers soon.

By the sounds of it it is Necrotizing enterocolitis... I just goops to god that they get him the treatment he needs ASAP
