IUGR babies

Hello,

Is anyone else having/has had an IUGR baby, when did they induce you, if you were induced. My little girl is currently on the 3rd centile with assymetrical IUGR.

I have some experience with premies as my son was born at 35 weeks and I thought he was small. Currently 31 weeks and consultant mentioned something about 34 weeks. All this not knowing is horrible.

Also if you've had an IUGR baby - do they have long term effects of growth restriction? I've read about lower IQs and stuff on google.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. My first baby had IUGR and her head was very out of proportion with her body. She was under the 0.4th centile at 560g/28 weeks. I had an emergency section and a very easy and complication-free time in NICU.

Now she is 16 and she is still tiny at 4'10" and unlikely to grow much more, though I am only 5'3" myself so she was never going to be tall and your baby is already further along than mine was. I have heard second hand stories of other small babies who've grown into 6'+ monsters.

As to the IQ, we've had the opposite, my daughter has just got 9s and A* in all her GCSEs and has won a college scholarship and has just started studying 4 A levels. All in a failing secondary school in a very poor area with no extra help.

My 2nd was 36 weeks/ 4lb 14oz and he's now nearly 10 and normal sized, having caught up by the time he was 3. He's also much cleverer than I am.

Try not to worry about the future and just focus on what's best for you all just now. The not knowing must be awful, but hopefully you'll be strengthened by knowing what to expect as your son was early. Can you ring your midwife or consultant to have a chat about what plans they have for you?

My first baby had IUGR due to my pre eclampsia.
He was 5lbs4oz when born at 37 weeks.

Now aged 14 hoovering the entire contents of my fridge, taller than me, as tall as dh, doing fabulously at school, I can honestly say, don't worry, from tiny acorns, mighty oaks do grow Grin

Thank you so much for your replies, you've both made me feel much better. At my next consultant appointment I'm going to pin them down with what exactly is their long term plan. Smile

My twins arrived by planned section at 34 weeks as my little boy twin had IUGR. He was always measuring behind his twin sister and weighed 3lb 14oz (sister was 4lb 8 so not a huge difference) and we spent 14 nights in scbu for weight gain and temperature regulation. Now at almost 9 months he is 17lbs and back up on the 25th centile. They are tough little things babies, please don't worry x
