8 week immunisations

Please can I ask how big your LO was when they had their 8 week Immunisations and how they reacted to them? My DS is having his next week and is only 4lb7oz and I'm feeling a bit anxious about it with him being so small. Some reassurance would be lovely please x

Goodness I can't remember what he weighed but he did have them at 8 weeks actual (2 weeks corrected) so will have been quite small. Maybe 7lbs or thereabouts.

He was fine. He did get a slight fever but calpol helped. He had a higher fever later, I think it was the second set of jabs or maybe the third.

If you're concerned, speak to your doctor or someone from the hospital (assuming your LO was in NICU for a bit and you know people there). For example you could ask about spacing them out a bit - they are never keen to do this but sometimes say yes. This can reduce fever (likelihood and severity) but increases likelihood of more fevers if your DS reacts to all of them in that way.

Hope it goes well.

Thank you. Feel so nervous about it for some reason

I totally understand and felt the same. Sounds like your son was born earlier than ours too so even smaller.

By the way I did read that very premature babies sometimes have their jabs in hospital which means any adverse reaction can be dealt with. This may just be for babies still in NICU though - I assume you are home already?

One other specific thing - which annoyed my GP but I insisted - is to decline the Men B jab and then have it done separately about a week after the others. This is the one that causes the highest fever so we decided to separate them, even though it held the risk of two fevers rather than one. They will probably refuse to do it on the NHS but you could look at private providers local to you if you can afford it.

Try not to worry too much though and remember, the vaccines are pretty safe and a hell of a lot better than getting the diseases they prevent.

My DD was about 5Ib, I was nervous but she was fine - no temperatire and was just a bit sleepy after. My theory was that shed had lots of tests and drips etc in hospital so she was braver than other babies in a way. The only thing to consider is that the amount of calpol they recommend for after is based on a full term baby so you need to ask them to work out how much she needs by her weight.

My ds was born 8 weeks early so got his around his due date think he was roughly 5/6lbs by then and he was absolutely fine. No symptoms at all.

Mine was very similar to this, gosh you feel like the needle will go right through don't you? But they completely know what they're doing, it was over in the blink of an eye and didn't have any after effects at all!! Try not to worry op it's for the best!!

Thanks all, he had them yesterday. I had already queried the calpol dosage so was prepared with that. He cried, I cried, there was lots of crying but touch wood, he's managed really well. Quite sleepy but no temperature so far x

Glad it went well. My daughter was premature too and was approx 7lbs at 8 weeks.
If helps you to know, the first lot were the worst for her. Having said that they weren't too bad; she had a temperature and was unsettled for 24hrs or so with the 8 weeks jabs, but she was much better with the next two lots.

Peachypie83 · 06/07/2017 12:49

Thank you. He's sleeping lots and it's the perfect reason for lots of cuddles.

Will be so much more relaxed when he chubs up a bit!
