Help my preemie is miserable :(

Hi my baby boy was born on the 9th march at 3 weeks early. He had a low birth weight of 4.3lb due to IUGR and spent 11 days in transitional care. He is now 8 weeks old, weighs 7.5lb and is miserable. He screams almost all day apart from an hour or so when he naps.
He suffers terribly with trapped wind which wakes him up from his naps. I've tried pretty much everything I can think of to help - infacol, dentinox, gripe water, a sling, a bean bag, his Moses basket it's nearly vertical, white noise (which helps get him to sleep), baby massage, mam & dr browns bottles, comfort milk & probiotics and nothing seems to be helping. In fact I think it's getting worse. He drinks 150ml every 4 hours but sometimes goes 5 hours at night. He can lay on his changing mat ( only place he seems happy) for up to 2 hours awake and happy but as soon as he falls asleep he starts groaning in pain, pulling his knees up, cries, screams & holds his breath like he's straining while going red in the face. He does plenty of wet & dirty nappies. Cuddles don't soothe him at all and sometimes he screams more if he's picked up, I just don't know what else to do. It's heart breaking and extremely stressful. Can anyone think if anything I'm not trying? The HV isn't much help as she just recommends all the things I'm already doing. I haven't tried colief yet due to needing to put it in the bottle 30mins before a feed, I can't leave him screaming for 30mins before feeding him as he will be taking in so much more air and make his trapped wind even worse, plus the bottle has to be chucked 1 hour after being made so I'm going to end up wasting bottles as he might not finish in the 30min gap as it takes so long to get a burp out of him and try to wind him at every 30ml of he will be in even more agony. I'm at my wits end tbh and had to send him to his Nans house last night as I can't take the screaming anymore. Please help!! Thanks

Hi ladies the doc has prescribed nitramigen but bubba won't drink it he just spits it all out and still wants feeding. Any ideas on how I can make him drink it? I've tried mixing with his comfort milk but he still won't take it :( I've bought some SMA Wysoy but after reading online there is a lot of bad info about giving it babies under 6months and also giving it to boys. I really don't know what to do to help him 😭 any more ideas are gladly welcome x

Hi OP sorry to hear you and DS are still struggling. No advice I'm afraid, just wanted to offer you Flowers and Cake.

daisygirlmac · 09/05/2017 22:35

I'm sure my HV mentioned putting vanilla in it. DS is still trialling lactose free so I've not got there yet but worth an ask?

daisygirlmac · 09/05/2017 22:36

Also have you tried it slightly warmer, just thinking out loud here really

Fingermoose · 09/05/2017 22:39

When my LO moved to dairy free milk we were advised to introduce it slowly, so 5 scoops of cow and gate and 1 scoop of dairy free for two or three days, then 4 scoops to 2, etc. The whole process took a good couple of weeks but it gets them slowly used to the new taste (normal formula is sweet and nutramigen etc are not).

We were also under the dietitian and paediatrician who gave us gaviscon for reflux. Maybe the GP could refer you for a bit of extra advice - if it is CMPA then a dietitian can help when it comes to weaning. Good luck OP, it's hard but you'll get there.

AimeeLeah88 · 11/05/2017 07:49

Thanks ladies. We ended up at A&E yesterday as bubba was in agony. They have diagnosed reflux and prescribed Rinitidine so we shall see how we go. They think it's best to treat the reflux first and then we can re look at the CMPI if no improvement. Xx

Reflux?
Get ranitidine on prescription

AimeeLeah88 · 11/05/2017 08:04

Yes they have given us a prescription for it rather than gaviscon as they said gaviscon thickens the milk and coats the throat but his milk is already quite thick and it doesn't last as long x

Ah OK I didn't see that in your op.
Could he be dairy intolerant? Has that been investigated?
I used colief as well as ranitidine but mine were older so on a feeding schedule so the waiting 30 mins thing was less of an issue.

Cakescakescakes · 11/05/2017 08:09

If the ranitidine doesn't work then ask for omeprazole. But often ranitidine is successful. I had a refluxer and it was horrific but he turned into the most happy sunny baby once he was well onto the meds. Hang in there :)

PotPlantAddict · 11/05/2017 10:34

I know its expensive, but we found the cocoonababy a godsend for sleeping.

As his legs are a little higher it should help with his reflux as well.

Ours came into the living room in the day time for naps, as well as evening sleeping. It was specifically designed for premmies, so I have a lot more confidence in it than a sleepyhead, but that's just personal preference.

AimeeLeah88 · 12/05/2017 15:00

We did look at intolerance but he wouldn't take the hypoallergenic milk :( he's seems a lot happier already although still about colicky so I think the rinitidine is working🤞🏼thanks for all your help ladies x
