Confused about 6mnth formula

Hi all,

DS is 6 months actual, just under 5 corrected. I have the Bliss leaflet on weaning and it says to move to the next stage formula at 6 months corrected.

I was wondering if anyone knows the logic behind this? I thought the 6 month plus formula had more iron in? And elsewhere on mn people say both newborn and 6 month formula are essentially the same. I could phone the formula company but I don't know if they'll be impartial!

Thanks

I would guess it means if you want to move to the next stage formula, you should do so at their corrected age rather than normal age.

Stage 1 formula is OK to use even after 6 months so there's no need to change if you don't want to. They're not the same - you shouldn't feed a younger baby the 6+ stuff, but you can continue using the from birth stuff until you stop using formula altogether, is probably what they mean. There's no particular benefit to switching.

Thank you. I guess the only benefit is the 6+ one can be cheaper (but obviously I wouldn't change for that reason alone)

I kind of did change for that reason, I must be cheapskate!

We got told told to stay on the infant formula until changing to cows milk at 1, I think the infant stuff is more fortified?

WindYourBobbinUp · 16/03/2015 21:01

The bit that's confusing me is I was told a preemie has less iron stores and needs more iron, and stage 2 appears to have more iron in. And people say ff is simple!

I'm with you demented, I should've phrased that as I wouldn't move due to cost if the newborn one is better for him

It was invented to get around the no marketing allowed of infant formulas from birth.

WindYourBobbinUp · 16/03/2015 21:16

Thanks hellospring that's interesting to know.

It does have more iron but it's a bit of a gimmick, because it's not very absorbable iron, or something.

Feed iron rich foods, especially meat, from the start of weaning. There's no reason to wait to introduce meat. If your baby is slow to wean or isn't interested in food you can get vitamin drops - ask your health visitor.

I don't think the infant one is particularly better. I'd probably move for cost reasons too! If it didn't agree with the baby then you could always go back.

Thank you Bertie that's really helpful

My hv who was very good (this time) told me to keep dd on her normal one til 1.

WindYourBobbinUp · 17/03/2015 14:47

Thanks plenty. My HV is one of the 'he's not really prem' brigade unfortunately, despite the fact he is. She only turned up once he was 5 months old anyway.
Anyway...I digress! Seems like the best thing is to stick with newborn, thanks for your help
