Highchair recommendation for premature baby

Pipsmilkmaid · 04/02/2014 08:29

DS, born at 29+6 is now six months and I'm trying to do baby led weaning. I've been using the bouncer but it means he can't pick up food himself or sit at the table.
He's 10lbs 8oz and has a very slight frame but is quite tall can sit up with support but not in his own.
Mothercare recommended a highchair suitable from birth with lots of padding. I wondered if any one had any experience and could recommend one that has a tray and that can also be at the table.
Thank you.

The Ikea Antilop with the blow up cushion would work - you might need to put an extra cushion/ folded towel under to raise him up to the tray properly.

The antilop w blow up insert was perfect for dd who was a former 27 weeker.

I have antilop too for my former 27 week DS. It's great, but definitely buy the blow up insert too.

I called Bliss to chat about weaning and they suggested starting my boy, now 24 weeks actual, 17 corrected, in a Bumbo. I'm thinking about going for it next week, as he's definitely interested! I have a Mothercare MiHi for when he's big and steady enough.

What about a stokke with the new born attachment?

Pipsmilkmaid · 10/02/2014 03:32

Thanks all we bought a chicco Polly magic but returned it, think we're going to try a cossetto but will look at the others too. We really don't have a lot of space so needs to fold down too.
He's still quite happy in his bouncer but is getting filthy and if he's on my lap will try to take food off my plate.

We watched friends feed a wobbly term baby at 17 Wks in a bumbo on the table this wk end. When DS is ready I'm going to try it. Seemed like a good option x

Bumbo with a tray or Antilop high chair

Bankholidaybaby · 12/02/2014 15:31

Bumbo feeding day three: it's working very well so far.

FraggleRock77 · 12/02/2014 18:44

Interesting BankHol. Can your LO sit up yet or is the bumbo supporting? What age are you weaning at? X

Bankholidaybaby · 12/02/2014 20:23

He's 24 weeks actual, 17 corrected. He can sit with support but only for a few wobbly seconds on his own. The lovely lady at Bliss said I could use his rocking chair instead, and if he didn't have good head control, support his neck and head with rolled towels. His head control is pretty good now, so that wasn't necessary.

Bankholidaybaby · 12/02/2014 20:28

I think the usual rules about head control and sitting for weaning don't apply with premature babies, as it's important to get iron into them and it can take longer to wean, so an early start is recommended, depending on the baby. I spoke to HV and GP before starting, and then put it off another week! It's going well - we're just doing a couple of spoons at lunch time. He's desperate to feed himself, so he holds a spoon and flails it at the bowl before shoving it into his mouth! I then offer my spoon, which has the purée.

I used an antilop with the cushion for my 32 & 27 weekers when they were big enough to support their own weight comfortably.

When I started weaning I mostly used a bouncer. My 27weeker was only 8lb or there abouts when we started weaning so to small for a highchair.

Pipsmilkmaid · 17/02/2014 07:34

Thank you for the recommendations. We ended up buying a Cossetto one of our friends from the unit already had one and recommended it. It is height adjustable, can be used with or without try and can recline too. We tried ds in it and he could reach the tray and the padding on the seat seemed supportive enough.
