Breast Feeding a Prem Baby

I've posted a few questions but just for info our boy is 6 Wks old and 36 Wks gestation. I'm currently breast feeding him every three hours.
Before BF was established i was double expressing after every feed but now I'm just making sure the fed off breast is empty (although i know they never fully empty).
Some conflicting advice on NICU causing confusion. I'm worried my milk will slow/diminish as he is not full term. Any advice/guidance please??? Smile

So far he's refusing the bottle Confused a bit worried as I'm supposed to be out one night next week and have a Spa day booked in a couple of weeks......life's never simple!

I agree with something poppet said, nicu/ scbu dont really understand bf, a nurse when ds was in scbu was surprised when i suggested they were over topping him up as at only a few days old how small (smaller than a ping pong ball) his stomach would be, luckily we got bf on track after about 4/5 days and stopped top ups.
I would ask if there is a bf expert at hospital as they will be much more help, i think pead nurses are not necessarily trained to promote bf.
I found scbu to be a very emotional time, and was pushed into all sorts of things i wished hadnt happened, e.g not being able to pick up ds because it made him tired, when actually once i had read about kangaroo care him being on me most of the time seemed to work for us, luckily he wasnt plugged into too many machines or in an incubator, so the argument for kangaroo ing was easier!
If no one at hospital to help with bf, worth contacting la leche league or nct bf counscellor?

The staff at my hospital and particularly Scbu were brilliant, DS started out being tube fed a mixture of ebm and formula every four hours and then as he got to grips with bf we started demand feeding with fewer top ups with the bottle. Not long after getting home we stopped the top ups as he was bf perfectly well. He had a couple of formula bottles over Xmas new year which he took perfectly but now I need him to be able to have the occasional bottle he's not interested.

How's it going FraggleRock? With our DS still not taking bottle (have got new bottle to try) but baths are now good- low lights, music, warm room and wrapping him in a towel. Wish the little angel would sleep a bit better though.

Most days at around 6pm he has a spell of being very unsettled. He'll start feeding then go red and start crying while still trying to feed...the only thing I can do is sit him up and burp him and keep swapping sides until he settles.

Hope your little one and you are doing ok.
