Reasons for premature birth

I gave birth 5 weeks early, and signed a consent form to have the placenta sent away for diagnostics in case it may have some defect, but have no idea what the results are, or why I gave birth so early.

It got me wondering if people have any idea why their baby was born early or is it one of those mysteries in life that no one will ever know?

They'll probably want to do a monthly vaginal swab in case of any bacterial imbalance.

I had pre eclampsia at 34w which turned into HELLP syndrome at 35w.

The most frightening experience of my life, DD was born by emergency C section which I had to be asleep for as an epidural was far too dangerous. We are both okay now but she was very small and I was very poorly for a while after, my liver function took 3 months to retun to normal. My placenta came back from analysis as being full of clots. I had PE with dd1 but managed fullterm with her, think I was unlucky to get HELLP this time.

mini definately ask for cervix length. I asked and got refused as i was classed as low risk second time round.
I got to 33 weeks in the end, but it was very nearly alot earlier. I had two treatments twice a day. I had a good consultant who supports the treatment as its still a trial drug so it depends on who you get. Evidence suggests it does work but they don't know how yet.

Oh yes, swabs, thanks BFG.

thanks soap - is that progesterone you were on?

FraggleRock77 · 19/12/2013 19:11

PlentySoap, i was not aware about the ProG lengthening the cervix. Interesting. Xx

plentyofsoap · 19/12/2013 19:30

I had scans every week after I started the treatment and it was either the same or slightly longer. The aim was to get me past 32 weeks which I did. I had funnelling as well though which was scary. I would have continued the treatment until 34 weeks.
I really think it helped. They offered me a scan after the birth as they think I have a different shaped uterus. I did not take it as its my last baby and the nhs has spent enough on my uterus!
I have two friends who had similar issues and both had the treatment and both got past 35 weeks.

plentyofsoap · 19/12/2013 19:32

It was progestrone tablets. They had to be placed right up next to the cervix.

Just waiting to see the Consultant in the next few Wks so will mention it. Just a) want to be able to get pregnant again in six months and b) hold onto the baby a little longer. Both big asks!!! X

My ds was born at 32 week on the 17th march. His due date was 13th may.

My dad passed away on 11th may, 2 days before my due date.

If ds was in time my dad would have never seen his first grandson as we live 300 miles away.

Ds was in hospital for a month. When he was allowed him we made the journey to see my dad. He died 2 days after our visit

I believe this is why ds was born early xxxx

My first a little boy was born sleeping at 23 week's due to incomplete cervix. He weighed 1 pound 1 oz. I'm now just under 24 week's with a little and had a cervical stitch placed because my cervix is being crap! But luckily she's still in. :-)

minipie · 11/06/2014 19:15

Just returning to this thread after a chat with the consultant (surprisingly helpful).

He was able to rule out cervical problem as I was under 1cm dilated when I came into hospital after PROM.

Also unlikely to be a uterus problem as waters went before contractions started.

He said most likely an infection - not one of the nasty ones (as they swabbed for those and it was negative) but just an everyday bug getting to the amniotic sac and weakening it.

Nothing to suggest that would happen next time. Fingers crossed that's true as we are now TTC DC2. And I guess that also means I won't get any monitoring as they will see no reason to do so. The only thing he said they would do is a cervix scan at 20 weeks (but don't they do that anyway?)

YoungWoman so sorry to hear about your DS and very much hope your DD has now arrived safely.

eurochick · 19/06/2014 17:50

mini I seem to be following you around the board today!

I don't think a cervical scan is standard. I think they only do it if you have had cervical treatment or there is some other reason for thinking that they should.

minipie · 19/06/2014 19:12

hi euro - I think I probably stalked you first Grin. Ah ok, I couldn't remember whether my 20 week scan last time had included a look at the cervix.

Megs87 · 27/06/2014 17:16

Emergency section at 34 weeks due to pre eclampsia and they wouldnt let me carry for any longer due to my bp not coming down with tablets and crazy high protein levels

Chuckading · 14/07/2014 20:28

I had pre eclampsia and cholestasis both diagnosed at 30wks and had an emergency c section at 31+1 as my bp wouldn't stabilise and my bile acid was too high and risking ds
