Went back to NNU today

DD came home on 29 may, then we had an appointment with the consultant about a week after. But I hadn't been to NNU since.
I went in to drop off her old prem clothes and pop in a Christmas card and a photo of DD.

I had expected a wave of emotion. But I felt a bit weird walking up to the hospital and then nothing much in the unit. Except I couldn't believe how small the babies were. I can't remember DD being that small (but she was).

I wonder if maybe I am getting over the trauma of it all. So there is hope for all of us!!!

Glad that it didn't hit you hard when you went back. I'm surprised actually that they let people in who aren't parents of babies on the unit then and there - infection control, you know.

DS was born in Feb and I can't actually believe he was ever that tiny. I kept a couple of his first vests and sleepsuits and they just look like dolls' clothes when I hold them up.

I was only in the hallway bit. There are glass doors and windows through which you can see the babies in their rooms.
It is actually amazing though how easy it is to get in there.

We've kept some of DD's clothes too, some in her memory box and some for her dollies when she's older.

I think when we left the NNU we were "ready to leave" psychologically as well as physically - I strongly believed that it was better for her to be at home at that point. I went back to the NNU a couple of times and did not really feel much - just relief!

And yes, now that she is 2 and a half (and a lot taller than some of her peers) I cannot remember how small she was...

My twins are now 5 and until we moved (2 years ago now) we went back on Christmas Eve each year to take a tin of chocolates in and a Christmas card and basically show them how well the twins are doing. Again it was just in the hallway, but we were there for nearly 7 weeks and I was there all day every day, so got to know the staff very well. It was just our way of saying thank you - and the staff loved that they got to see how the twins were progressing.

I also agree that its hard to comprehend how small they were when you see other prem babies - there was a little girl on One Born Every Minute / at Christmas who looked just like my DD, it was quite emotional seeing the footage - my husband had to leave the room!!
