No one to come with me for surgical termination?

Hi

Well it's not really a surgical termination but I had to keep the title short.

I had a failed medical abortion at the beginning of December. Some has come away but I've still got retained products.

Been back and forth for what seems like an eternity with the clinic, several scans, several lots of medication (which I didn't want, I asked for surgical after the first time failed but they've made it seem like I had to try again).

Finally booked for surgical which I've waited weeks for. The clinic is over an hour away.

I have absolutely no one to come with me. No family in the country or partner.

I only have a handful of good friends. All either have work that day and can't swap, or have children to take and collect from school so can't with the distance.

Buses or train going to take me 2.5hrs each way. It's a nightmare. Taxi will also cost a fortune.

I don't understand what people do, I have absolutely no one. I also need to get back to collect my nursery age child at the end of the day (6pm).

I really have no one to help.

I'm not extremely rural, I live in a village on the outskirts of a town. However the only abortion provider that covers my area on NHS is located over an hour away. But on public transport it will take me 2.5hrs. Clinic says I obviously can't drive myself back which is fair enough.

Driving is just over an hr.

Train would be 2.5 which involved taxi to station (about 20 mins away not walking distance), train to the city, and then taxi to clinic.

Train there
taxi back

llt37 · 25/01/2025 10:51

I think I'm gonna to call some taxi companies and see how much there and back is, it's going to be a couple of taxis anyway to get to the station and then to the clinic if I get the train which seems like a lot of hassle for an already crap process I'm going through.

I just wish women's healthcare was better, I don't live rural at all I live near 4 major cities, 3 are closer to me than this but it's just the clinic I have to go to covers my area for NHS treatment, I live right on the bottom boundary of the county.

Have you told your good friends?

I can’t get my head around not helping a friend in this situation

if it was work - I’d say I had a critical app to attend

if it was school logistics I’d rope in favours

but no way would I leave a good friend to do this in your situation.

So one of my friends is on her last leg with her job, she's on an attendance management plan as her had her own health issues and had to have time off for appointments and surgery.

My other good friend is a nurse, she's only just qualified and started her job. She's been told there is no possibility of a change of shift as already short staffed.

My other friends all have children. 3 or 4 kids each not just one, so asking for favours for school drop off/pick up is difficult as most people cannot fit that many extra children in the car. 1 maybe. Village school isn't walkable.

It's crap my friends who know have tried to help. I just don't have that many friends.

My other best friend doesn't drive x

Op I can guarantee that for a good friend I wouldn’t allow school pick up to stop me. And nor would mine. You ask around for play dates, you rope in… gasp, the other parent, you basically just sort it. And not one of them can pick up your daughter from nursery???

The pregnancy has ended- it's retained products left.

One of my friends is able to collect my child from nursery for me, as I won't be able to drive anyway so that helps me.

I think I'll just have to get a taxi there and back, I really have no one else to ask x
