Dilemma: Chelsea & Westminster (C&W) vs Queen Charlottes (QC) for Maternity Care – Seeking Recent Experiences

Hi everyone,

I’m currently 9 weeks pregnant (due in August 2025) and trying to decide between two NHS hospitals for my maternity care: Chelsea and Westminster (C&W) and Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea (QC). I’m the first in my friendship group to get pregnant, so I don’t have much insight on the pros and cons of either, or what factors I should be focusing on.

I’ve been reading reviews and online threads, but I’m still feeling torn. It’s also been hard as there are no hospital tours available since Covid, which makes it tricky to get a full picture. I’d really appreciate hearing about any recent experiences from those who have been to either hospital or have worked there. Thanks in advance!

Here’s where I’m currently at:
QC seems like a great option—it’s closer to me and has an “Outstanding” CQC rating. However, many reviews mention that it can get very busy, understaffed, and chaotic at times, which makes me nervous. I’m wondering if the increase in referrals following the CQC rating has made them struggle with volume? I’ve read some concerning stories about people going into labor while seated in the waiting room, or being transferred to other hospitals due to bed shortages. I have also read the after care is quite poor.

C&W has a “Good” CQC rating, but it’s connected to the main C&W hospital, which is rated “Outstanding.” From what I’ve read, C&W might have nicer facilities, likely due to the demographic and fewer high-risk referrals. However, some reviews suggest that it might not be as well-equipped for high-risk labor situations since it handles fewer of those cases on-site.

I’ve always had a gut feeling that I’d prefer an elective C-section, but I know it’s still early days and that could change. Ultimately, I’m focused on choosing the hospital with the best continuity of care, support, and safety available.

At the moment, I’m leaning towards starting at C&W, as I’m concerned that QC might be too busy. I’m also considering that if any complications arise, I could always transfer to QC before labor. But I do worry about this plan—complications can happen unexpectedly, and I’m not sure how realistic it would be to make a smooth transfer at the last minute.

Has anyone had recent experiences at either hospital, particularly for a first pregnancy? Any advice would be really helpful, especially to help me determine whether my concerns are accurate.

I’d really appreciate your thoughts!

Thanks in advance!

Wish I’d seen this earlier, I faced the same quandary, I’m also due in August and had the same hospital options. I have a friend in ObGyn who said C+W was currently better of the two for care. That said, I’ve heard some horror stories from friends who have had births at C+W - generally they boil down to there not being enough doctors at certain times, resulting in a couple who didn’t get epidurals in time despite wanting them for ages, and a few emergency c sections that took too long to be dealt with. I’ve therefore decided on an elective c section and midwife has referred me to a consultant in obstetrics to walk me through it / confirm my choice (I hope!)
