Agony 3w after coil insertion???? *TW - termination*

Hi everyone, I'm really grateful for any advice anybody can offer.

I had a surgical termination just over 3 weeks ago now, I was 9w. I have sadly had an abortion before, I was slightly further along last time and I had absolutely no pain after apart from very mild cramping but that was bearable. I then had what felt like a period after.

This time around, I had the copper coil fitted while I was asleep during the procedure. I've never had a copper coil before. But since the TOP, I have had constant cramping and pain that never relieves even with painkillers. The pains are getting worse and they are not at all bearable. At times they get so intense it feels like contractions and I'm curled up in pain. Is this due to the copper coil, does anyone know? I feel like going to the GP but will they ask me where I got my coil fitted? I don't want my GP to know about my termination, so I asked BPAS not to tell them and I really don't want to end up having to tell them myself.

Thank you in advance

Firstly I'm sorry you are going through this. It's a difficult time when you've had to make this decision and the procedure is by no means easy. I've had a surgical termination at 9 weeks and was offered the coil but declined it. I then suffered the pains you describe within 12 hours and they continued for around 2 weeks, I was constantly fobbed off at my local women's hospital and prescribed antibiotics and codeine until they eventually scanned me and I had retained tissue requiring another procedure. Please seek medical advice, dont be embarrassed, you have been strong and brave this far. Your GP/local hospital are not there to pass judgement and wont ask your reasons for termination.

Hi, thank you so much for your reply to my post.

It was such a difficult decision for me to make and I feel quite deflated and sad that it doesn't feel like it's over yet because of the symptoms I've been experiencing. I've been beating myself up quite a lot over it all.

After seeing your message, I called BPAS this morning and I've now got an appointment this week which will hopefully give me some answers. Thank you for the encouragement to seek further advice, I had been putting it off for some time hoping that the pain would disappear.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience. I hope you're well 🙏🏼

Just wanted to give a positive update 😊

I had the coil removed and it was 100% the coil that was causing me the discomfort and immense pain. That's not to say that everyone who has a coil will have the same experience with one as me, but I wanted to reassure anyone reading this that it was not the termination that caused the severe cramps and pain. I am now on another long-term form of contraception.

All the best to everyone x
