Using the NHS website I was hoping to bypass the GP. I filled out a bpas form and got confirmation I would get a call 24 hours later. It all looked so supportive....I also filled out an MSI form when I realised they have a closer clinic. I was so anxious yesterday waiting for a call that never come. Instead I got an email 26 hours later that I'm out of area for NHS treatment...I know i don't want to keep this baby, but my husband does not support me in this. The email saying they can't accept NHS was from bpas but also has MSI. What's the easiest route I should take?

I'm not sure if this is an option for you but I paid privately through MSI as I was also out of the area for NHS treatment. There is also another organisation NUPAS so you could check if they are close to you

Update, I'm booked for a scan with nupas, after having a telephone consultation. I've been reading up on terminations, and how traumatic the medical ones can be and i thought I'd be offered surgical or medical. However, she went through the medical procedure. I asked about surgical and was told their clinic for that is more than 100 miles away. 😔 On top of that, I won't be prescribed codine because I'm breastfeeding, even though I said I could not feed my toddler for a bit. I cried a lot during the consultation. There's an absolutely harrowing post on this forum at the moment, and I'm just imagining my husband calling me a murdering cunt, because he wants to keep it, and has asked me not to kill his baby.

You need to do what is best for you and your family and you are not a murdering c*#t. Depending how far along you are the medical route may not be as bad as you think so you may be able to cope without pain relief. I have also had 2 early miscarriages and yes it was painful but manageable and over within an hour.

OP, I'm also in the same position and absolutely shocked at how difficult it is to access such a common and much-needed service.

Like you, I was informed 48hours later that BPAS do not have NHS funding in my area, MSI the closest clinic is 2hr away and NUPAS only offer medical abortion and the only place available with them for surgical is Bolton which is 200 miles away. I live in a very large populated area so I can only imagine how awful it must be for people that live in more rural areas.

I feel a surgical abortion with sedation would be much better physically and mentally. I'm currently 6 weeks pregnant and was informed that a surgical abortion is highly unlikely to be booked before 10-12 weeks. For my own emotional wellbeing, I am not willing to wait that long.

I really don't want a medical abortion due to the length of time it takes, time off work, having to pass the pregnancy at home and the risks of medical side effects, retained tissues, bleeding, etc. However, unless I'm willing to continue the pregnancy to what would be way to late for me and travel, I'm now forced to choose the medical option.

Also not able to have codeine due to breastfeeding. I've been told to ask my GP for alternative pain relief, however I highly doubt they would prescribe anything in advance and by the time I get hold of them when I actually need it, it'll probably be too late.

Hi, yes very similar, Bolton was also my closest and 100+ miles away. The medical procedure was absolutely fine for me. I did worry about things you mentioned but having the abortion in a short time frame was more important to me. It is a shame that the options are presented on the NHS website, but in reality, medical is the only really accessable option. Nupas are great at the end of the phone. I'm also breastfeeding and couldn't have codine. However, I took one dose of paracetamol and barely felt I needed that. I am lucky that I don't get period pains much so maybe that's why. Also, I did the abortion in the evening, slept ok through it, just got up to use the toilet. And while I took the next day off work, I actually felt okay. The rest of the week I could work fine.

At least we live in a country where it's possible. Best of luck.

Thank you for sharing your experience, I think I've built myself up to prepare for the absolute worst.

Bramblecrumble22 · 27/06/2024 17:07

I mean they tell you the risks, which you've said, but the serious one are really unlikely. I go passed clots three times. The worst was the second time I woke up in bed and coughed, felt something move so when I went to the toilet fake coughed again and something fell out. I braced myself but that was it. Midwife assured me you don't see anything at this stage (i was 7 weeks). Most would be the white sac.
