I’ve seen lots of different views on this and thought I’d ask. I’m 22 weeks pregnant , and haven’t been offered the WC vaccine as I’ve to book it myself . Did you refuse it in pregnancy and why ? Did you have it and have any side effects or negative outcomes ? I’m in no way an anti vax, I’m just absolutely petrified of injections and not actually knowing what’s being put in me and the side effects . Please tell me your experiences !

I’ve had 5 children and had the whooping cough vaccine with first four, no problems with the vaccine or side effects or anything, with my last baby I wasn’t offered it at any appointments so I actually asked the midwife’s themselves for it they told me to see other midwife’s as not there clinic asked 4 different midwife’s and I just got told yeah we can do that for you and that was it nobody gave it me dispite me asking for it, and again no problems with not having it in all fairness the midwife’s weren’t really bothered weather I had it or not. End of the day it’s up to you I did try to get it but never happened with my last baby, had it with others and no side effects although everyone is different

Very important indeed. If a newborn/young baby catches whooping cough it can be extremely serious, and can result in death. You getting the vaccine provides protection to your baby in those early vulnerable months of their life until they can be vaccinated themself. I had no side effects at all with mine.

Hi.

If you had all your childhood vaccines you would have been vaccinated with this as a child so will be nothing new to you.

There are four elements of the vaccine, diphtheria, tetanus, polio and pertussis (whooping cough) that's the one we want to protect baby against. YouTube whooping cough, one it sounds horrific, two it can be very dangerous in newborns.

The way it works is it travels to baby through you to give them protection. Your baby will then have their own doses at their primary vaccination course, they'll have doses at 8, 12, 16 weeks and then a booster at 3yrs 4 months.

As with any vaacine, most common side effects, sore arm, headache, swelling to localised area of injection, just like any vaccines.

Hope that helps you make a decision. You can always make the appointment and discuss with the nurse. You don't have to agree after having a discussion about it but at least you will be fully informed.
