Abortion experience BPAS 2022

I had a surgical abortion through BPAS today 23rd December. Thought I would share my story.

i found out I was pregnant around 3 weeks ago which I knew right away I wasn’t going to go through with the pregnancy, I contacted BPAS who booked me in for a telephone consultation the following week.

The telephone consultation made me feel at ease and I knew I wanted to go for the surgical due to the horror stories I’ve read online of the tablet version.

I got booked in to a clinic closest to me for today, I’ll say the worst part of it was the waiting around to be seen. I arrived at 10.45am and didn’t get seen for a few hours after for my scan. After the scan I was given 2 mistoprostol tablets to put under my tongue to loosen my cervix. These tablets did give me slight cramping but nothing that was unbearable. An hour later I got called up to the theatre so this was around 3pm. I got given a gown to put on and placed into a waiting room with other girls, after around 20 mins I got called into theatre where I got my IV put in my hand and the doctors were the most lovely people so reassuring considering I got so upset at this point. My emotions were running wild. After my IV was in they put in the general anaesthetic and I was asleep. I was only asleep for 7 mins before being woken up in a recovery room and it was done. No nausea or pain except from a minimal cramping. I’m so glad I chose the surgical route as this was far less traumatic for my own well-being. I had the coil fitted at the same time. Been given antibiotics to take at home to prevent any infections from occurring.

Just thought I’d share my story for anyone who is struggling to make a decision. It’s hard mentally I’ll be honest but I know it was the right decision for me.

if anyone needs any advice feel free to talk to me 😊.

How far along were you? So glad it went well for you. Did it hurt?

I'm grateful you shared that you had the coil fitted in. Hopefully it will be something I do in the near future. I'm just scared it will hurt.

Hi, no there was no pain. I was fully asleep so I felt nothing. I do recommend doing it this way. I suffer from anxiety so being put to sleep was my best option.

@Positivevib I was 8 weeks and 2 days too but has the medical. I wish the clinic gave me the choice to have the coil fitted in but it was never mentioned to me. Hope you're well and thanks for sharing xx

Hello @Positivevib hope you don’t mind me jumping on your thread. I’m around 8 weeks and have an appointment with nupas next Tuesday. I thought the only option was the medical termination under 12 weeks, did you ask for surgical or did they offer it? I am absolutely terrified of medical management as I had a TMFR at 17 weeks a few years ago and it was horrific, I was in agony for hours and threw up everywhere. Then my labour with my son was also awful, I had to have an epidural at 3cm, my body just does not react well to labour

Hello! So I was in the same position, I also was terrified of the medical abortion. I explained this to BPAS and told them about my anxiety etc which they were very understanding and offered me the surgical procedure. The only thing is I had to pay privately as I was travelling from Scotland to England to have it done.

Thank you so much for your reply @Positivevib! Can I ask how long you had to wait until the procedure? And was it an overnight stay in hospital?

Positivevib · 27/12/2022 21:23

Yeh I waited a week from the original phone call then on the day I waited in the waiting room for a few hours! Wasn’t too bad, and no I was only asleep for 7 minutes so it was a very quick procedure so I was allowed to go home a few hours later xx

@Positivevib hello thank you for sharing your story I'm due to go in tomorrow for the pre assessment and I'm very nervous also suffer with really bad anxiety and abit worries about the surgical procedure, I haemorrhaged with my youngest child so that's playing in my mind a lot...was just wondering how long after your pre assessment was you booked in for surgery.
