Tips for making a medical abortion more manageable

I have my consultation tomorrow with BPAS and I will be getting the pills by post in the next couple of days. I’ve been reading women’s accounts of how they found the process and was wondering what tips people had for making it more manageable and less painful. Tbh I am petrified of going through this as I suffer with health anxiety.

I went through this in June this year. I made sure I had a hot water bottle nearby, painkillers (although mainly used the codeine BPAS sent me) lots of spare knickers and a pile of pads. Also bought a trashy magazine to distract myself during the ‘waiting for stuff to happen’ parts. It was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting though. You will be fine x

Had mine in June too. Took some pain relief and went to bed after inserting the second set of pills. Work up and passed 2 big clots on the toilet. It wasn't much worse than a period and I was 8 weeks 2 days. Please don't worry x

Is the abortion service free ? Do you have to get in touch with your GP first or directly to BPAS ?

scaredandanxious01 · 13/12/2022 12:23

@Feelinglost77 it was totally free for me and funded by NHS. I went directly to BPAS.

How long was the waiting time to get everything done? I’m not sure if Im pregnant yet but Im feeling really stressed and depressed. What were your initial symptoms? Would it remain confidential or would they let the GP know?

@Feelinglost77 it's confidential don't worry. But I suggest contacting them (bpas) asap either them or nupas or msi.

@Feelinglost77 My period was due and I had sore boobs and bloating but none of my usual pre-period spotting which for me was unusual. I found out on a Friday, had my consultation on the following Tuesday and pills arrived Wednesday. Took the first one immediately and the second lot the next day. It’s all confidential and they don’t tell anyone not even your GP unless you consent.
