What is the process for termination through NHS

I’m wondering if anyone can help me and tell me what is the normal process for obtaining termination via NHS? I’m in Wales if that makes a difference.

I found out at almost 6 weeks that I was pregnant. After phoning the NHS sexual health and asking for referral to termination they could only give me an appointment which was over 2 weeks away. This is for a video call “consultation”. By the date of this consultation I will be 8 weeks exactly.

Does anybody knows what happens after this? How much longer am I likely to have to wait after this consultation?

Im really worried about it being left so long and possibly not being able to have MA because of it.
Also, the longer it goes on, the more pregnant I feel and Im worried it’s going to have a more damaging psychological affect leaving it so late.

Any one have any experience of what I can expect please?

Hi, sorry to hear you're going through this.

I can only speak from my experience in England but my understanding is abortion services are contracted out by the NHS to either bpas, MSI choices or nupas. I believe this applies to wales too.

I phoned bpas directly who then check who your registered GP is and therefore if they provide services in your area. If they do that person will then book you a consultation appointment - mine was about a week wait.

How long it takes to get treatment from the initial consultation depends on a few things - if you are sure on your dates / how many weeks you are, if you need a scan & what method of termination you chose. If you're sure on dates, have no other health concerns that would warrant a scan & want a medical termination & are suitable to have this all done from home then the pills could be posted to you within a couple of days.

My advice would be to call bpas rather than wait for the NHS consultation - unless that consultation is actually with bpas / MSI

Feel free to ask any questions you may want to 😊

Thank you for your reply!
I did initially call BPAS but was informed they don’t fund in my area. That’s why I called the NHS.
However today I phoned BPAS and decided to pay privately for the consultation. They were able to offer me an appointment the same day - today!
I’ve just got off the phone with them. They are sending the pills by post today.
I have to say the weight has immediately been lifted.
The wait for the NHS would have been an extra week of worry. This has been so quick and easy.
It wasn’t as expensive as advertised on their website either.
Thank you for your advice

Hi, you're welcome 😊. Sorry they weren't able to fund you & that your NHS service was a long wait but great that you've been able to finance it yourself & that you've had the consultation already. Hopefully the pills arrive quickly & you can move on.

If you need anything or anyone to talk to just shout 😊
