Hi everyone, I have just found out that I am pregnant on Sunday last week. I don't want to have this baby and want to have an abortion but not sure if I should choose medical or surgical abortion. I have an appointment at sandyford in 2 weeks for a scan to find out how far I am in my pregnancy as it is an accidental pregnancy. I have chosen medical abortion when received the phone call but have changed my mind after reading bad reviews about medical abortion. Any help and advice would be appreciated. Thank you

Best to post on the pregnancy choices board, lots of advice and experiences on there including lots of positive experiences of medical abortions.

It would depend on how far along you are. 2 weeks seems a long time to wait for a scan.
I’ve had a surgical termination at 11 weeks and a medical termination at < 6 weeks. The medical one was much less traumatic. Basically a heavy period.

Hiya,

Hmm, the bigger your uterus gets, the more risk of a perferation during a surgical procedure, so the earlier is definitely better if you go for surgical. I've had surgical, and a friend of mine medical, and neither of us had any problems. 🙂 I don't think you should be anxious about either decision. Also, don't be worried if your AF takes forever to return, it did for both of us. Far longer than Mr Google thinks.

Thanks for your reply. How was your experience with a surgical abortion? I missed my period last month as I have PCOS . My last period was on the 8th of August and I did a pregnancy test on the 17 September 10 days after missing a period as it happens a lot every few months . It's like usual for me. That pregnancy test was negative. I did another pregnancy test 2 weeks later which was Sunday last week and it was positive. I am really confused in this situation because I am not sure if the first test was accurate.I chose medical abortion when I received the phone call yesterday they gave me an appointment for a scan and first dose of medicine for a medical abortion in 2 weeks. Not sure about it now if should go for it or have a surgical abortion specially when I don't even know how long I have been pregnant for. I am really scared that it's going to be painful or some bits might remain inside that might cause discomfort or more pain later. Thanks

Thanks for your reply. So if am only 6 weeks or something it should be fine for a medical abortion because it is so early will be just like having a period. A bit relaxed now. Thanks

Very early I'd say medical would be less traumatic. Also privacy and home comfort and support. A general anaesthetic and hospital stay is very disorienting

Hi OP, we just wanted to let you know that we have moved your thread to the pregnancy choices board where we feel this is better suited. Wishing you the very best. MNHQ

Hi, sorry you've found yourself in this situation as well. I've had both types of abortion (can't quite believe i'm saying that!) & both within the last 12 months.

First abortion I went for medical, the tablets made me feel horrendous & I bled on & off for a couple of weeks.

The surgical involved a couple of weeks wait as the centre nearest me only did the surgery every other week - I was nearly 8 weeks when I had it done. It was over in 10 mins & recovery was great.

For me the surgical option was the best choice for me. Mainly psychologically actually, I found the waiting to start bleeding, wondering if I'd passed the pregnancy yet quite stressful - like I didn't really know where my body was at. The surgical I knew as soon as it was done it was all over.

Downsides to pills for me were they made me sick but once they'd done their trick it was very straightforward, no cramps & very manageable bleeding. Cycle went back to normal quickly. I did find it quite lonely though which sounds strange - they were posted to my house & I never saw anyone.

Downsides to surgery was having to wait for a date, meant I got to the point of nausea & sickness, off food, exhausted & had to put up with that for 2 weeks. Still feel it was worth it though for choosing surgical.

Really happy to answer any questions if I can 😊
