Afternoon All!

I’ve just reached my 12 week mark for my first pregnancy and am registered to give birth at the royal surrey…

Has anyone gone the elective caesarean route and can comment on their experience? How easy it was to have this method approved and the support you received?

(please no judgement, it’s a super personal choice)**

Hi OP, I’m at the same point at you in my pregnancy, and I explained to the midwife at my booking appointment that I will be needing a ELCS, and my reasons - she was very matter of fact about it. She just wrote it in my notes that it was happening, told me the consultant would be in touch to talk me through it, and advised that I can’t go to the local hosp as it doesn’t have the facilities. It’s all in writing in my notes - but of course it remains to be seen how it goes from here. Since the Ockenden Review, hospitals have dropped their ridiculous targets for pushing vaginal births. I’m still going to go in armed with my reasons and research, and be prepared to be strong and firm. Best of luck to you OP

Maybe ask MNHQ to move this to ‘childbirth’ instead of pregnancy choices - which I think is more commonly used for discussions of abortions.

I had an elective at the royal Surrey!

A few years ago now. But honestly one of the loveliest places (better than dc1 by miles)

I was consultant led due to being high risk. They said up front they would support me whatever I chose. I said I wanted elective. They said okay we need to have a meeting.

It was basically a chat with a couple of midwives and consultants. We had tea and biscuits and it was very relaxed! We talked through my concerns and the risks. Then they went okay we'll pencil that in.

I hope you have a similar experience. I can't rate them highly enough. The section itself was extremely relaxed too.

Even the post natal ward was pretty good.

Take care and hope it goes well with you

It will be fine.

So you know, you will need to have an appointment with the consultant. As c sections are surgery they need to tell you all the risks so you can give informed consent to the procedure.

It might sound like they are trying to scare you, they aren't. For any surgery they need to tell you these things.

As it's an elective, you might not get this appointment until past 30 weeks and you might not get your date confirmed until well into your third trimester. It could be sooner, but don't worry if it seems quite late. Usually they are done at 39 weeks but as there is no 'medical' need you will be fitted around more 'urgent' cases as you might be more flexible.

@Twizbe thank you so much for your reply. Really helpful!

Glad that helped.

Also don't worry if they give you a date and nearer the time move it a bit.

Surgery lists are complex and depending on clinical needs of others on the list you might be the easier one to bump a day or two.

Hello everyone,

I am 36 weeks pregnant and am planning to give birth at Royal Surrey hospital in a few weeks. I have just requested an elective c- section to my midwife due to high anxieties with vaginal birth. I have not been followed by the Jasmine Team or a psychological as I thought that I could deal with it myself during my pregnancy, and the thought of having a C-Section gives me peace of find (although I know it’s a mahjong surgery with a kind recovery and I am aware of all the risk associated to it).

I have my appointment with an obstetrician consultant (Dr Koomson) on Tuesday 6th May and I am terrified he is going to refuse my maternal request for a C-Section as I read that he was very pro-natural birth. My midwife told me I was completely entitled to request one though.

Did any of you do a maternal request for C-section in Royal Surrey and was it easily accepted or did they try to talk to you out if it? Did any of you had Dr Koomson as a consultant and what do you think about him?

If they refuse, what should I do… ? I am really anxious as I will be running out of time, having my consultant appointment during my 37th Week of pg.

Many thanks for your help,

Hi,
I’ve asked for an elective c-section for similar reasons and I’m booked in to see Dr Koomson at the Royal Surrey in October, how did your experience go, was he resistant to the c-section or was it okay?
Thanks

Hello, would you mind sharing how this experience was for you with Royal Surrey please? I have requested an elective there too. Thank you.

Hi, it was totally fine. It was with the consultant and a midwife and they just asked about wanting a c-section and then explained any risks. The midwife went through that they’re not there to put me off and I don’t need to put forward a case/fight to have the C-section, it’s more of a meeting to discuss and check that I understand the risks and so on.
