Surgical abortion (MVA) - honest opinions wanted

We got accidentally pregnant and with 2 kids already we’re just not ready for a 3rd.

Due to a medical condition I can’t have a medical abortion, only surgical. My 2 options are to have an MVP under local anaesthetics next Thursday or wait until the 12th of May for a general.
I obviously just want to get the procedure over with but having read a few people’s stories of MVPs I’m really scared of it being a scarring experience.
Can anyone share their experiences and advice with me please?
thanks

Going in on Thursday 😢 wish I never had to make this decision… it’s so hard…

How many weeks will you be? I seem to remember surgical are more successful the further along you are, so if it’s still relatively early, you might be better waiting for the GA, especially if that’s your preferred option.

So very sorry you are going through this, it must be a very difficult decision to make. I created this thread a few weeks back that might have some useful opinions. Although I’ve mentioned D&C in the title it was an MVA vacuum procedure. 16 week blighted ovum with stalled miscarriage, small sac to remove.

I was under the impression in the thread that my choices were general or sedation when it was actually general or local with no sedation.
I went for the local in the end. I just wanted to be in and out and get it done. And although it’s not a pleasant experience I’d say you can get through it and it’s worth it to be able to go home straight away and feel well relatively quickly. There was no pain afterwards for me just bleeding so was relieved to go home and relax at home straight after. My partner asked my if I had to do it again what would I do and I said probably local again, so it’s definitely manageable, not pleasant, very very quick. A couple of minutes of actual vacuuming.
Again I’m so sorry you are dealing with this. I found it so difficult to plan and know what to expect as there are so many variables in the pregnancy that affect our experience and fewer women have gone through both methods I think. But if I can answer any questions I’m happy to x

I had a MVA under twilight sedation and it was fine .

Sorry you're experiencing this and hand hold here !!

Hope you have good support around you xx

The MVA was mentally hard because I was awake whilst everything was happening, but the pain wasn't unbearable at all and I could physically carry on as normal hours after, I actually walked home.

DailySheetWasher · 27/04/2022 00:24

Based on my own experience with GA vs stories from friends who were awake, I would absolutely go with the GA. Hope everything goes well for you either way Flowers

Thanks everyone, it honestly really helps to read some experiences and advice.
I’m 7 weeks today which is the earliest they can do the MVA.
I’ve been thinking about this non-stop but mentally I think I’d find it harder to carry on for longer and my pregnancy symptoms have been worse than ever before…
I feel a real mix of emotions but I know it’s the right decision for us as a family…

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone. The procedure went really well. It was a lot less traumatic than I expected and really wasn’t too painful. I chose to listen to a guided breathing track throughout with my eyes closed so didn’t hear or see anything and I can honestly say it was more uncomfortable than painful. Just wanted to share my experience as I read so many negative stories. If anyone ever finds this thread and has some questions please get in touch.

Hey OP, this post was so reassuring to read especially as it is quite recent. I'm choosing to go with the same method under local next Wednesday but I don't have anyone that can come with me and the clinic is a bit far from home. Do you think realistically, would I be able to take public transport home after? It's maybe 5 min walk increments and a couple of trains, through busy London. Thank you so much for the post

Need to add I will be roughly 6 weeks so still early and fairly straightforward
