I need to have a medical termination but almost died following medical management for a MMC. Help!

I had a MMC discovered at 11 weeks (the HB stopped at 7 weeks) almost four years ago and I opted for medical management. AFAIK I didn’t take an oral pill, I only remember them inserting a pessary. The first pessary didn’t induce bleeding so they inserted a second one after about 8 hours then the bleeding began. It was exceptionally heavy bleeding with huge clots (some were fist sized) and honestly, the hospital room looked like a murder scene. I went into shock after approx 4 hours of heavy bleeding and fell unconscious, I then had emergency surgery and a blood transfusion. The whole thing was obviously hugely traumatic and I suffered with PTSD for some time afterwards. When I had my second MMC a few months later I opted for surgical management which was much swifter and easier to deal with.

I’m now in the unfortunate position of requiring a termination, I’ve only just missed my period so I’m 4 weeks. Unsure whether the gestation will make a difference or not but I’m absolutely terrified I’ll haemorrhage again, only this time I’d be at home. Can anyone offer reassurances that this won’t happen or is it safer for me to have an ERPC? Thank you.

You need to talk to your GP and explain what happened before and mention your PTSD. With your history I don’t think it’s at all unreasonable for you to request an alternative to at-home medical termination.

I would ring the epu at the hospital, they do terminations too. They will also have your records from the miscarriages x

Your abortion provider can arrange for you to have a surgical treatment
It's not first line option for an early pregnancy but given your history it is possible
You'll either have LA or conscious sedation, insist upon it !

Nobody can say you won't react badly again so you must flag this and discuss safe alternatives.
