Medical Abortion - Lockdown

Hi all, so I wanted to explain my experience of having a medical abortion via BPAS (British Pregnancy Advisory Service) during lockdown in England. Firstly, I am writing in this in the hopes that if anyone is going through a similar situation, they can find comfort in my experience and thus enable them to make an informed choice.

I found out that I was around 5-6 weeks pregnant, which without going into personal details; my husband and I was not in the position to have a baby, nor was I mentally ready to go through pregnancy. Without further a-do I will explain the process. I called BPAS on a Thursday, they had a telephone consultation with a nurse the very next day, Friday. When the Nurse called I discussed with her any medication I was on, any health issues, regular periods, ovulation date etc and then she explained the whole process to me. I was also asked why I was considering an abortion and offered counselling. I was nervous, but ultimately still very willing to go ahead. As I was medically suitable for the medical abortion, I was asked if I wanted to collect the treatment pack from a specific clinic or have it posted to me via 24hr Royal Mail. I stupidly requested the postage option as I was told it could be here the following day (not a good idea). It was obvious Royal Mail were delayed, therefore I phoned up on the following Monday in panic asking if I could collect from a clinic instead, as I was so nervous but also each day seemed to drag on with my thoughts and discomfort. Fortunately, I was able to collect my treatment pack from a clinic near me and when I arrived, I had a quick discussion with a Nurse who answered any additional questions, this is why I recommend this option.

Once I got home (Monday), at around 3pm I took the first dose of Mifepristone which is taken orally with water. I had no side affects from this what so ever. Then at 3pm the following day (Tuesday) I instered the 4 Mistoprosal tablets into my vagina. I also took a codeine tablet for good measure in case the cramps started. I noticed some minor chills, which were only brief. I had no bleeding and very little cramps for around 4 hours. At 7pm I started bleeding lightly and inserted the extra two Mistoprosal. I heard that pacing around helps get things moving so I did that for a while. At around 10.30pm I started to bleed heavyish. I noticed that I had passed two small clots. I went to bed and the next day (Wednesday) the bleeding eased up and was very minimal. This concerned me as I expected the bleeding should be heavy for 4 days at least. The next day, Thursday the bleeding was heavy again and I noticed I had passed a couple more clots. The cramps were slightly uncomfortable but not painful and I took Codeine to assist with the discomfort. The bleeding was like a heavy period and I noticed there was some jelly like blood in my pad (this is normal). I bought some Night pads and Tena pants on top which were really helpful for sleeping. The next day (Friday) the bleeding continued and the cramps eased off. I had an appointment to see a Nurse in a clinic near me, which was made due to the bleeding initially not being heavy enough and really just to put my mind at rest. (You don’t have to book an appointment, as long as everything has gone as expected.)

At the appointment I saw another lovely Nurse, where I explained what had happened. I was told to lay on the bed whilst she examined with an Ultra-Sound scan probe which went into my vagina - don’t worry, it did not hurt at all and only was inserted a couple inches, with lubricant. The Nurse could see on the monitor my womb was completely clear and there was no part of the pregnancy left behind - which was great news.

After the appointment I was told to just monitor my bleeding. Today (Saturday) the bleeding has eased up slightly and is not as heavy as yesterday.

Finally, I would like to conclude by saying this whole process has not been easy, but ultimately it was what I wanted. I feel much better in myself now the treatment is complete and it has a high success rate. I was petrified after reading experiences on here, but I can say it’s been a relatively straight forward, painless experience. BPAS have been very helpful. Please be careful where you read experiences and try to get your information from medical professionals. I hope my experience provides you with comfort and confidence, please feel free to ask any questions about the process that you may have. (Please be kind).

Thanks for sharing this! Did you have to take time off work? Did they offer you any documentation to provide to an employer at all?

Clrke · 28/03/2021 18:06

Hi, I was working from home but I could imagine I’d be able to work as long as I wasn’t doing anything too physically demanding. They did email me my appointment letter which I could have shown my employer if necessary. Hope that helps :)

@Clrke So pleased to hear you dealt with your EMA well
I'm a Bpas nurse
You describe the process very well , your post will help others in this position. Thank you
Hope you are ok - don't forget you can access counselling at any time if you feel you'd like to talk to someone

Thank you so much for posting this. Sounds like a speedy process which is what I wanted. Unfortunately my appointment isn’t until Friday which I’m devastated about because it seems so long away. Just wish it was tomorrow so I could get it over with as I’m further on than you and know times ticking. Thanks again!

I’m glad this has helped you. I understand your situation and I found that even one night seems to drag on when you’re in an uncomfortable situation. But try not to worry, Friday is nearly here

@User93505 you don't have to provide evidence of anything
You are entitled to time for a medical appt and by law do not have to declare what that is
If your boss is a man .. say it's a woman thing , he'll most likely run a mile and won't ask

Hi love Thankyou so much for this post. I took the first medication yesterday afternoon & am due to take the second tablets in an hour or so.. I am SO nervous for the pain I’ve almost made myself sick all week worrying about it and you’ve put me in a bit more of a relaxed head space!

Brunchtime · 10/08/2021 23:56

@Clrke I'm glad I found this post. It's reassuring. I had my first pill today and got very nervous just thinking about possible infections if something is left behind. But after reading your story I'm calmer for tomorrow when I'll have the second lot.

@Sallyg19966 how did it go for you?

Sallyg19966 · 11/08/2021 03:06

Girls!! It went so well. I have house mates that stay up late that I didn’t feel comfortable telling so my partner and I set up fresh sheets, a candle, a movie and some water and stacks in our room. I waited until they went to bed at 10pm to take the second medication. I took the codein and anti nausea tablets supplied by the dr before taking the tablets. I had four tablets to dissolve in my mouth for thirty minutes before swallowing.

Three house went by with no pain, no bleeding.. I started to worry and literally on three hours on the dot (1am) I was still awake and had been drinking lots of water. I felt a strong cramp, I felt pressure on my lower pelvis and went to the toilet. As soon as I stood up a felt bleeding and actually held a hand towel on my underwear as I walked to the bathroom as there was a lot of pressure and I knew I was bleeding. As soon as I sat on the toilet I had bleeding and 30 seconds later passed the pregnancy (7weeks) and a large tissue/clot. (Both were the size of about two of my thumbs. I then sat on the toilet with mild cramping and passed another clot which was long and the size of my thumb again. I sat on the toilet for a while bleeding quite a lot but I knew it wasn’t too much. I put a pad on period underwear and went back to my bed. My partner got me a hot water bottle which helped with the cramps which then became a little stronger. I had to change my pad in one hour as it was full but not flooded. I passed another clot. I then changed my pad again the following hour and all cramps had then stopped. I watched some YouTube videos and at 3.30 fell asleep for three hours. At 6.30am I woke up with mild cramps and took Panadol. I went to the bathroom and had to hold a towel under me as I felt like there was a lot of blood. Some blood got on the towel and I had flooded a pad but mother had leaked overnight as I had the period underwear (highly recommended it’s like wearing two pads) I changed my pad and stayed in bed until 10am with a hot water bottle. I got up and went out to get a coffee for one hour. I was changing my pad once an hour and felt a bit nauseas from cramps but just topped up with more pain killers. I had soup at about 4.30pm and went to bed.
It was such an amazing experience full of relief and gratitude that nothing went wrong. It has been 6 days now and I am changing a small tampon every three to four hours. I am experiencing cramps and taking panadol and nurofen for this. I can feel that it will pass soon but I am full of energy and am so happy that I made this decision for myself. Don’t be scared, set yourself up comfortably with more than enough pads and the privacy you need. ❤️❤️❤️

@Sallyg19966 thanks so much for your update. I'm glad it all went well for you. I had to wait 2 weeks to get my pills and it seemed like an eternity. I just want to have it done and hopefully have a straight forward process like yours. Flowers

Sallyg19966 · 11/08/2021 10:41

@Brunchtime have you taken the second pills yet, also how many weeks are you if you don’t mind me asking xx

Brunchtime · 11/08/2021 18:05

@Sallyg19966 I'm going to insert the second tablets at 8pm after the children are in bed. I'm 6w+3. It has just been 24hrs from my first tablet and I've started bleeding a few minutes ago, no pain. I hope when I insert the tablets they don't come out due to the bleeding Sad

Brunchtime · 12/08/2021 08:57

It's done! I took my painkillers 1 hour before I inserted the 4 tablets, then laid down for a couple of hours. Started bleeding heavily, went to the toilet to change pads and started passing some clots. On my second run to the toilet, I passed two large clots that I believe were the pregnancy. I didn't experience any pain and managed to get some sleep. Apart from the clots, it really has been just like a heavy period.
