Selective reduction - is it available in the UK?

I’m so sorry to ask this here, and it’s breaking my heart that I even have to consider it. I’ve just found out that I am pregnant with twins, it is a massive shock. For a significant number of reasons - physical (I’m extremely petite), mental health, financial, and for the preservation of our family, we just do not feel we can go ahead with it. I am struggling to find any info about my options - I have read about selective reduction, is this something that is available on the NHS? Please be kind and don’t judge me.

Hey, please feel free to DM me. We were in a similar situation and there are options out there. I'll also do a proper post about what we did as we feel there isn't a lot of information out there about it which can be very distressing. Sending lots of love to you and others in the same boat x

Hi, I have been reading this thread and am in the same position. I am unable to DM either of you, do you have an email of the fetal specialist(s) I can approach please. I am really struggling with this situation and really don't want to terminate both, I just cannot cope as a single parent with 2. Thank you in advance! @Unexpected2020 @ChainsawBear

newtothis2022 · 15/12/2022 12:48

Hi, Are you able to message me or post the advice or information you mentioned please? I am desperate to find a solution that doesn't involve terminating 2 pregnancies as I don't feel I will be able to cope mentally with this. Thank you

MammaD1 · 15/12/2022 17:30

I had SR in October. PM me if you can. Happy to share what I’ve experienced and know. X

Lollixsam · 21/12/2022 18:24

Hi @trialsinvox I am new on here and I can see that the last post was last year but I have just found out that I will be having triplets and it's driving me nuts as I can't cope. Could you please share a link or details of what you did?

Ipngaying · 05/06/2023 21:49

Can I get the information as I am in the same situation now

Lollixsam · 06/06/2023 06:29

With triplets it’s way more straight forward. Call feral medicine in london x

I’m in the same situation, just found out that I’m pregnant with twins. I need some help with finding good clinic

Sunshine1403 · 06/12/2023 21:34

Same here - I‘m totally devastated and I would be happy if some of you could share with me their experiences and which clinic they have been at… Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi there, I am also curious about selective reduction for DCDC twins? Are you free for a quick chat?

Lollypop1991 · 28/01/2024 21:05

Hi, I am going through a similar situation, I have found out I am pregnant with twins (separate) sacks, it’s still early stages 5/6 weeks I’ve been told, I already have 2 children and couldn’t handle another 2 more mentally or financial having one more child I could just about handle, can someone help me/ point me in the right direction for this procedure as nothing online helps my situation and am desperate?

Oh my god me too 😭 i have been searching for hours a day for almost a week now. Any information you have please do share!

Creamcracker1993 · 22/07/2024 19:24

Hi all, anybody have any updates? Recently found out I’m pregnant with twins (for the second time, first time ended with one stopping growing at 7 weeks).. we already have a toddler, and we just don’t have the space or money for another 2 babies..
does anybody know where we can go for selective reduction? Been told I can’t go through nhs because they only do it for 3+ babies…

Amy2024 · 07/10/2024 23:16

Hello. I am exactly in the same situation now. May I ask if I you found any private/NHS to help you with this? Struggling to find a way out of this situation

Creamcracker1993 · 08/10/2024 06:35

I did!! So I emailed loads of consultants and clinics and got told to email the Fetal medicine centre in London - [email protected]
I had a consultation roughly about 11 weeks where they scanned me and explained what would happen, then a week later I went back to London and had the procedure, the procedure itself was super quick and not painful - just very emotional but it was the right thing for us. Professor Kypros Nicolaides did it for me, he’s amazing at his job! If you google him, he is the guy you want doing it, he’s like the god of Fetal medicine. The consultation was £120 but did include a scan and the procedure itself was £500. I’m now 19 weeks pregnant and my baby is growing as they should and hopefully continues to do so! Please ask any questions as I know how scary it can feel to be in that situation and lonely when it’s hard to find someone who’s been through it. I hope you’re okay ❤️

@Creamcracker1993 I have tried to send you a private message, not sure if it has sent, but would hugely appreciate chatting through with you. We are in the same boat, and I am beyond devastated as there seems no good option in this situation.

Creamcracker1993 · 14/02/2025 12:30

I will always try my best to reply as quick as I can as I know how lonely and scary this situation can be ❤️ if anybody has any questions or worries please do message me!xx

Hi there. Wanted to thank @Creamcracker1993 for the useful information. I was in the same situation, contacted fetal medicine center and prof. Nicolaydes did the procedure for me. He is the one you could trust and the best at his job. I am continuing with my singleton pregnancy now on week 29. @Sunshineandunicorns123 I am writing so you know you are not alone. It is very emotional situation and not an easy decision, but you can go through it. 🩷

So glad you’ve been able to find this thread and it has helped you.
just an update - Iv had my baby, a beautiful baby girl! Natural birth, the only thing was I had a retained placenta (due to the other baby & placenta) and the baby was still visible (I didn’t see this tho).. it has all been sent off for testing. It did eventually come away so no need for theatre, but then my uterus wasn’t contracting down so had numerous medications and it was fine. Overall blood loss was approx 1.3l, but I’m absolutely fine and baby is healthy ❤️

So happy for you 😍💗 Hope the best happens for every mum to be out there. Wishing you all the best in growing her up.
