Experience with post medical abortion

This isn't easy to talk about but would please like some insight or any experience anyone has had with medical abortion.

I had one, it would be 3 weeks Thursday and the bleeding and cramping started within the hour. I passed large clots and what I am guessing, the pregnancy. (So sorry for the detail) i bled for about a week and it slowly tapered off and then the following Saturday i stood up quickly and there was a gush of blood. I made it to the bathroom and had to change my clothes. I was told this could happen so wasn't too worried, and the bleeding settled down again. Until Wednesday morning.

I was walking to my Slimming group and could feel i was bleeding heavily but was wearing a couple of pads and thought i would be ok. Got through slimming, and as i was leaving i bled so heavily it soaked my clothes. Luckily I was wearing black leggings and had on a long coat but still had to walk the 20 minutes home. It was horrendous and i was so worried that someone saw either at slimming or on my walk back. Even my socks had to be changed. Again so sorry for the tmi.

I called the hospital who just said i would need another scan on Thursday. The bleeding has pretty much stopped now and i am debating on trying a pregnancy test tomorrow (and speaking to the pharmacist) and if it comes back negative whether i will still need the scan.

I have never done this before so i really don't know what is normal.

Have the scan. It’s best to make sure all is ok x

Coffee Hi, I work for BPAS Thanks

It's normal to bleed like a heavy period for a week post EMA abortion. Was it Wednesday just gone that you had that very heavy gush of blood?

If so, I'd attend the scan. It's probably all complete but if nothing else it'll put your mind at rest. A pregnancy test should be taken two weeks post abortion. If it's positive, ring the clinic you had treatment for a post-op appointment.

They'll scan you there and arrange for addition treatment if it's needed (repeat tablets or possibly surgery).

If the pregnancy test is negative then I'd just have the scan at the hospital. It'll probably be quicker than getting hold of a post-op appointment with the clinic you had treatment in.

The pregnancy test you take should be the one provided to you by the abortion provider. I'm not strictly up to date with Marie Stopes (if that's where you went instead of BPAS), but they snlkld have given you one of their own tests to take. Shop bought ones can give an inaccurate result since they're more sensitive in general.

00youcanonlydraftthefuture thanks so much. I did get a pregnancy test from the pharmacy and as I suspected it is positive. I am hoping i can take the tablets again because there's no way i can have the surgery this side of Christmas because I have a 2 yr Ds and i have absolutely no one to take care of him, especially since nursery has ended for the Christmas break.
Thanks so much for getting back to me. This has all been a horrible mess and I just want to put it all behind me now.

Coffee I hope things ease up soon Thanks

For what it's worth, if you do need the surgery, it won't be until after Christmas most likely, the next appointment in likely to be over a week away now. So the next available will probably be around early Jan x

Repeat Tablets aren't always suitable, dependant on how 'retained' the products are. Then there's the slight possibility of a continuing pregnancy. I do apologise if it's too much of an ask but do you know if you passed a sac or saw anything?

Just replying whilst dealing with my toddler so apologise if I am incorrect, but didn't you say you were 7 weeks and a few days at the time of the early medical? If so then it's highly unlikely you'd have seen anything at all that resembles a fetus but very possible to see the sac.

Sorry you've had to go through all of this x

Coffeeandtv86 · 16/12/2019 11:07

I don't remember seeing anything no. Just been passing a lot of blood and large clots.
Yes i was 7 weeks when i took the pills, i had the first scan and the first lot of pills in the same day. I am angry with myself because i was telling myself before the appointment that i was going to opt for the surgical because i didn't want to go through the possibility if it failing but i was assured that that rarely happens. It's just my luck 😢

I am happy to wait until next year, the only thing that bothers me is bleeding again whilst out in public.

I guess it's just a case of waiting until Thursday morning now when i go back to the hospital.

Thank you x

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I had similar bad bleeding and ended up in a and e and an emergency d and c. If it carries on I wouldn't wait until January. You'll feel worse and worse and you need your energy to look after your son. I'm sorry.

youcanonlydraftthefuture · 16/12/2019 12:42

OP I would look out for signs of infection Thanks

Other than that, you should be fine to wait for a post op in January, providing you aren't bleeding so much that you become anaemic (that's not normal and needs A&E).

The abortion pill rarely fails in the sense of a continuing pregnancy, but retained tissue and therefore further treatment is actually fairly common x

Thanks for the replies. I am going to my GP tomorrow for a check up. I am guessing blood pressure and what not. The hospital rang today to see if i had taken a test, which I had and the nurse thinks it's just my body trying to get back to normal, hence the bleeds but wants me to get checked.
Physically i feel absolutely fine and the bleeding is still very light
