Hi. Has anyone had a tfmr through surgical? My doctor advised a surgical as a medical is very traumatic. I had a c sec for my ds1 so I'm not at all sure about a medical. We are 21 weeks and will most likely have go through one Sad

I had a medical tfmr at 17 weeks so not quite as far on as you. My personal experience was rather traumatic due to the length of the process. I went in on the Wednesday morning to start the process and my baby wasn't delivered until early hours of Friday morning. I wasn't given the option of surgical as I was told I was too far on and it could have been dangerous for me or even made conceiving again more difficult. I know there is an alternative method for surgical other than a D and C as this was what they where going to offer me if baby didn't budge. The midwife said it's similar to a section, I can't remember the medica name for the procedure. However the recovery of that and not having a baby to take home seemed a double blow to me so I was glad the medical option worked. No option is an easy one sadly as you will still have the same emotions and loss to go through :(

Hi OP. Sorry you’re going through this. I had a surgical TFMR almost two weeks ago. I was 14 weeks so earlier on than you. I had mine done at BPAS as my hospital didn’t offer surgical terminations. You will probably find the same issue at your gestation and will need to go through BPAS or Marie Stopes. There are only certain clinics that have the expertise to do them at a later gestation so you may have to travel.

I found the booking process with BPAS a bit of a nightmare tbh at what was already a very traumatic time, but the actual procedure went fine and the staff were very kind and sympathetic to the difficult situation. You might want to talk to ARC (charity) if you haven’t already done so, they have been very helpful and also sent me lots of information to help me decide whether I wanted a medical or surgical termination.

Which option did you choose in the end? I am in the same predicament having had a c-section before

Any updates? I’m 14 weeks and my local hospital (nhs) are not being really helpful.
I’ve also previously had a c section so I’m terrified
