Alcohol when pregnant

Hi guys I'm looking some positive feedback if there is any. I didn't find out I was pregnant until 28 weeks-Massive shock. I was on birth control and still getting periods, I'm slightly over weight so no noticeable bump. I'm currently 34 weeks. My anxiety is through the roof as I've been drinking most weekends up until I found out. Usually one bottle of wine every Saturday night. I'm worried sick that my baby is going to have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. I've explained everything to my consultant and all scans look perfect so far but he can't guarantee anything until baby is here. Has any had/heard of a similar situation with a positive outcome?

One of my friends also didn't know they were pregnant until they were 30 weeks. She was at uni so was drinking a lot regularly and her little boy is just fine.
Congratulations by the way!!

Thanks for that, it's made me feel better. I'm getting so much conflicting info on google I should really stay away from it x

Try not to worry, it's not ideal but I think you would need to be drinking much more than that to cause something like that, like daily drinking.

You'd need to be drinking heavily every day to have a chance of FAS.
Please try not to worry your baby will be fine.

OP, it’s really pointless to fret about something that has already happened and you can’t change! Fretting will just upset you.
Take comfort from the fact that you weren’t drinking daily, so it wasn’t constant exposure to alcohol.
Pregnant women used to be encouraged to drink red wine or stout beer, and I’m sure French women will have been drinking wine during pregnancy for generations.
They didn’t all end up with damaged babies.
As your consultant says, you can only wait and see, but fetal alcohol syndrome causes recognisable facial features and it sounds like these are not present on your scan, which is encouraging.
Try to relax and look forward to meeting your baby. Good luck!

Please try not to worry. I was in a very similar situation with DS1 (not as advanced, but still relatively far on, and I had been drinking a scary amount - hen dos, Christmas, my birthday etc etc). I googled the hell out of it, scrutinised scan pictures etc etc. I got myself into a total state, but ultimately there wasn't anything I could do and it nearly ruined my entire pregnancy.

You really do need to be drinking a LOT (as in alcoholism levels) throughout pregnancy to end up with the terrible things Google will show you. Clearly it's not great having been drinking but now you know, you can stop.

DS is totally fine by the way!

Oh, and congratulations!

Yeah, happened to me. 28 weeks, lots and lots of drinking throughout until I found out. He's absolutely fine, lovely boy, thriving at school and no health problems at all. You'll be fine

Thanks again guys I feel so much better. It's nice to hear positive outcomes from real people. I'm torturing myself with google. One study has baby doomed for life and the other one implies he/she will be fine. I should stop reading up on it altogether Hmm
