Can someone tell me what happens when you have an abortion?

I am fairly sure I'm pregnant, 3 days late and I'm certain there is a shadow of a line on a cheap test, out that with the vile taste in my mouth and zero signs my period is on it it's way and there you go. Obviously I'd make sure first but if I am I 100% cannot have another child. I'm think I'm having a breakdown.

Can anyone tell me how I go about getting a termination, how long it takes etc etc? I need facts to stay in control.

when I found out I was pregnant at the start of the year I phoned Marie Stopes and after a phone consultation i was offered an appointment for a surgical termination 5 days later. It can be done very quickly if that is what you want.

Was that NHS funded?

You can phone Marie Stopes and if they are not able to help they will give you the number/name for the people who can in your area.

I had an abortion on the NHS some years ago, it was very straightforward.

I was referred via my GP, had a consultation and then the termination was booked in for a few days later. It was performed under anaesthetic and I was home the same day. I had bleeding for around a week afterwards, but no worse than a period.

Sending you love Flowers

Sorry I should've added, yes it was NHS funded.

I had mine through BPAS, I rang the day of the + I had an appointment 6 days later.

I was asked if I was sure if I was being pressured etc, then a scan to make sure I was pregnant and how far along etc to ensure I was eligible for the medical abortion.

The first time I was sent to hospital though as they couldn’t locate the pregnancy so was worried it was ectopic, hospital confirmed it wasn’t so I had an appointment the week after scanned again to locate and then given the medication there and then.

Also NHS funded

I had a surgical abortion 25 years ago and even then it was straightforward and i was in and out the same day. I think you can just take pills now.

CookPassBabtridge · 01/11/2018 19:58

Very straightforward.
I had two.. I had to go to Dr and she referred me to Marie Stopes. I went there a few days later, had a scan, confirmed how far along I was, gave me a tablet to swallow and then one to put next to my gum so it would dissolve slowly.
Went home and laid in bed all night having cramps and bleeding, it felt like a stronger period.
Took it easy next day but was fine.

I think you don't even need Dr referral now and can just call Marie Stopes direct.

Had one about 8 years ago, I think, so things may have changed a little but I imagine the process is probably the same.

Went to my GP, they referred me to BPAS (probably could’ve gone straight to BPAS but didn’t really know what to do at the time), had a scan and check up at a local clinic and they booked me an appointment at a BPAS clinic in a neighbouring city. All through NHS.

I was 7 weeks, I think. Had the medical abortion rather than surgical. Was very painful if I’m frank, but I don’t regret it at all. One step at a time. You will be okay.

CookPassBabtridge · 01/11/2018 19:59

And yes was all free on NHS.

whathappenswhen · 01/11/2018 20:03

Thank you all. Will test again first thing in the morning and call BPAS if need be there are 2 close to me.

Had it one year ago, called Marie Stopes and arranged the date about 2 weeks later. During the appointment had a scan (didn't have to look) then had first pill. Had to come back few hours later to have the second pill. Miscarried 5 hours later, was bleeding for 19 days. Burned a candle in the church and prayed. Now all good and forgotten. Good luck.
