Can someone give me the cold hard facts about a medical abortion please

I just need some unemotional facts about what happens please. How long does it take, how long does the bleeding last etc.

Thank you

I think it varies from woman to woman and it is definitely more painful the further on in pregnancy you are. I had a miscarriage at 12 weeks (physically the same procedure) and I had bleeding for about a week but it was only really heavy for the first 3 days. I had "couldn't leave the bathroom" type of bleeding for about 12 hours or so with labour like pains and then it settled and became like the kind of bleeding and pain you get with a period. I've had the surgical version too and it was so much less blood and pain. Waiting for the operation was horrible and I was physically shaking but that's the worst bit by miles and I felt physically back to normal the next day. I would go with the surgical option if you can, especially if you are more than 6-7 weeks pregnant.

I agree it's worse than a mc.
I had one at 9/10 weeks I forget. You take the pills. Nothing happens for a few hours it took about 3 for me. You can feel the foetus pass but I got plenty of warning. I bled through everything it was very heavy and painful but I was better after 24 hours. I was v scared I wouldn't be able to take my dc to the theatre a few days later but I was totally fine by then. You need a million pads though.

I had the medical abortion done at 8 weeks.
I took the mifepristone tablet on the Tuesday and the 4 misoprostol tablets orally on the Friday. So 72 hours apart.
After I took the misoprostol I started bleeding about 3 hours later. I felt a "pop" and that's when I passed the pregnancy in to the toilet. Bled heavily for a couple of days and then bled like a normal period continuously for about 6 weeks.
I passed a few big clots but this is normal.
I got an infection about a week after the procedure but this was cleared up with strong anti biotics.
My period came back 7 weeks after the abortion. My first normal period is due sometime in January.
I know you only wanted unemotional facts, but I just wanted to say that the medical abortion is not pleasant. It's a very long, drawn out process that lasts weeks and weeks.

I got mine through BPas. They were nice

I had one via the nhs at about 9 weeks. I went to hospital to take the first tablet and then 48 hours later went back for the further tablets. I had one placed in my vagina and one in my bottom. I was encouraged to go for a walk to get things going. I then got period like pains and like I needed a poo and passed the pregnancy. I was in hospital for most of the day and bled very heavily for a few weeks afterwards.

The worst bit for me was the appointment to arrange the abortion where you have a scam. I found it very emotional and difficult but everyone is different depending on the sits ruin.

I took the tablets all in one day with a few hours gap in between. Started bleeding about 3hrs after the last lot. Staff were nice.
I did gush blood, and I struggled with the pain (was at home alone), and went a bit faint but putting my wrists under cold water helped. Once the sac passed the pain stopped completely. I bled for a while but can't remember how many days
I don't want to say it was harder for me because.. but it was an unwanted termination so I was literally trying to "hold on" to it if that makes sense
I was anaemic afterwards. My friend had no pain and v little bleeding

I had one at 6/7 weeks. Was fine.

I drove back from the clinic after taking the final 4 tablets. Fell asleep. Woke up about an hour later so maybe 3 hours after taking the pills. Felt I needed to pass something so went to the toilet. Passed a clot. Then everything died down. I bled for a couple of weeks but can’t recall it being bad. Was on school run the next day, back at work day after that.

I had felt so ill whilst pregnant, that by the evening of the abortion I was feeling so much better. I can honestly say the relief at not dry heaving and having energy again meant I was on a high. I think that helped...

Mine was at 6 weeks. I went to BPAS as soon as I found out (via some difficulties with my GP who refused to refer me). The first visit they did a scan to confirm the pregnancy, the second, a week later (Thurs), I took the pills and had the suppositories put in. DH drove me home and I started to cramp on the way. Went straight to bed and slept. Woke up in the night and was bleeding heavily. I remember sitting on the loo for a long time but don’t remember the pregnancy passing.
It was quite painful but I’d been given good painkillers. Spent Friday in bed, still bleeding and sleeping on and off. Felt better on Saturday but still a bit wobbly, and a bit spaced out/confused. I remember watching Les Mis on Netflix and thinking Ann Hathaway’s makeup was awesome. Then realising eventually it was the Uma Thurman version. 😀
I was off work until the following Wednesday. I was still bleeding but not that heavily.
Look after yourself OP. The worst bit for me by far was the shame I felt when my GP refused to help me. That was horrible.
As soon as I was in BPAS’s hands I felt very cared for.

I tried to refuse the scan. I told the scanner v firmly I didn't want to see anything or know anything at all. All the bpas staff were very respectful.

Like a pp the relief of the end of pregnancy symptoms helped a lot. Also I had the mtop at 37. I had an stop at 19 and that affected me much more

Whambarsarentasfizzyastheywere · 29/12/2017 23:01

Thank you all.

I have to go into work the following day. I can't take time off. Seems like that might not be feasible.

When I called in sick - claimed d and v - no questions asked

molifly · 30/12/2017 10:51

I went to work the next day and was fine

Whambarsarentasfizzyastheywere · 30/12/2017 17:44

Would they give me a surgical if I asked? I'm around 6 weeks

OP posts:
molifly · 30/12/2017 18:43

I got the choice between both so I should think so

Whambarsarentasfizzyastheywere · 30/12/2017 18:52

Thank you. I think over all I would prefer a surgical.

In my experience (with bpas) they explain all the options to you based on how many weeks you are and you can choose from there. Medical didn't work for me - despite bleeding heavily and passing a large "blob" I remained pregnant and had to have a surgical anyway xx

Chienrouge · 31/12/2017 17:31

I had one at 7 weeks. It was fine, bleeding was like a heavy period. I could have worked the next day (didn’t as was on maternity leave with DD2, but spent the day looking after a 2 year old and 6 month old).

Myheartbelongsto · 08/01/2018 20:02

Went to clinic took tablet left to get bus, had to sit on pavement/curb felt awful. Got first bus to city centre to get second bus. As I was waiting blood trickled down my legs. Got on bus and it passed my old workplace so rang my friend who worked there, she came into toilet with me and I told her what I had done. Felt very sick, sweaty just horrible. My ex boss/her boyfriend drove me hone and the rest of the day and night was the most excruciating pain I've ever felt. I lay on the bathroom floor because the tiles were cold. The bleeding was very heavy and I kept passing bits. I remember there being something like a bag of veins coming out. Placenta more than likely. I bled for ages after also. It was horrific.

Booboostwo · 08/01/2018 20:31

I had a scan but the screen was turned away from me. I was only 4 weeks pregnant so had to wait two weeks - that was the worst but for me. I then took a pill and returned two days later for a vaginal pesary. I had very little pain, less than a period and then I felt like I needed to urinate and the fœtus passed without pain. I had bleeding for a few days but felt fine and continued with all normal activities.

SossidgeRoll · 09/01/2018 12:46

I went straight into work the same day I took the second pill - by that point it was just a heavy period.
I took the first tablet - then bled that night and passed a large clot. Told the nurse who was giving me my second pill, she arranged a scan which confirmed the pregnancy had ended. Took the second pill but then went into work and honestly felt fine. For me it seemed far less invasive than a surgical procedure but everyone is different. I felt happy and relieved afterwards - thinking of you.

Just wondering did any of you think about ttc since ? I had one two years ago at just over 9 weeks and bled on and off for about 10-12 weeks afterwards. I am now ttc and worried the prolonged bleeding was a sign that it had effected my Fertility but I’m hoping it hasn’t ! Any help be appreciated
