Managing morning sickness pre termination

I have made the decision to have a termination (not my first) due to personal circumstances. The pregnancy was a complete shock as I had been using contraception. I am going to have the medical rather than surgical procedure and guess that I am currently 5/6 weeks. Unfortunately my partner has to go away next week (he did suggest cancelling the trip but I said he should go as planned and stand by this) so I need to wait another week as he does not want me to go through this without him being here and I have not told anyone else. The issue is that I am experiencing terrible morning sickness... constant nausea and fatigue 24/7, vomiting up to 10 times per day. I am not a sickly person but feel so unwell and have had to cancel work commitments this week due to this. Firstly is this degree of sickness normal and if so has anyone found successful ways to manage it? I have tried sips of water, ginger, peppermint tea and antihistamines, none of which has helped. I am currently unable to keep anything down including fluids and feel generally teary and so tired. Any thoughts would be much appreciated

I would assume possible HG? Is it possible to bring the termination forward at all? I knowit isn't ideal but could you get someone else to come with you?

Chloe421 · 06/09/2017 13:57

Thanks for your reply. I had read of HG but don't like to think its 'that' bad. Unfortunately I don't really have anyone else to come with me, the two friends that I could possibly tell if absolutely necessary are both very busy at the moment.

I don't know much about it either tbh. I would say speak to a doctor as if you're vomiting so much the big issue is dehydration. Certainly try and get dioralyte into you instead of any other liquids as it replace electrolytes and stuff x

Chloe421 · 06/09/2017 16:02

I will definitely give dioralyte a go. I've just read that natural grated ginger can be helpful to some too. I am hoping that this is just a phase and it wears off soon.

Good luck xx

I'm so sorry. I had this too (a milder version) pre-termination and while I can't give much advice I can say that the nausea went away only hours after the procedure. Good luck, I hope the same happens for you.

As you're not going through with the pregnancy (have scheduled the appointment etc) isn't there something the GP can prescribe to deal with the vomiting? It seems cruel to treat you with the same guidelines as pregnant women whose pregnancies will continue iyswim, but Idk what the restrictions are.

Thank you sleeping x
Arousingcheer, good point, I to make a GP appointment but could not get one until next week. I'm not sure what the protocol is for prescription anti emetics when terminating. Went to a local pharmacist who to be honest was quite unhelpful and advised me to 'just keep whatever you can down'. Hopefully it will have worn off by the time of my doctors apt but if not fingers crossed that they will be more helpful

Thanks Silverlining. I had the medical option previously and I think for me it is best. I don't react well to general anaesthetic and the thought of having it done under local makes me feel more queasy! I'm glad however that it worked for you. I did not previously find it difficult emotionally as was mindful to think of it as purely a medical process and I knew it was the right decision for us. My partner was very supportive last time and this trip is also quite important so I'm trying to think of the next 7 days as a means to an end. Thankfully have lots of work to keep me occupied between bathroom visits! Confused

Can you ring for an urgent appt? Or a phone appt? Not acceptable to leave you a week. Maybe have a word with the receptionist if that is possible?
Or try another pharmacist (you could ring around, so you're not dragging your arse from chemist to chemist), that one sounds unhelpful. How about travel sickness patches?

Go to your GP and try to get the best antisickness mess they have.

Thanks again for all your supportive comments. I've actually just managed to get an appointment with a Dr at a local clinic tomorrow afternoon which is really reassuring as I imagine with them being specialist in sexual health/ pregnancy etc they will be more open to listening, and prescribing!

I had a termination last year and my morning sickness was unbearable beforehand like yours sounds, I ended up calling 111 and was given an OOH GP appointment, they prescribed me anti-emetics which helped massively - I was still sick a bit, but nowhere near as much. It shouldn't be a problem to get them, a nurse did tell me they'd be wary of doing so if I wasn't planning on terminating. Hopefully they will be understanding for you!!

arousingcheer · 06/09/2017 17:07

Brilliant, well done. Flowers

Chloe421 · 06/09/2017 18:23

Sorry to hear about your experience Carrie, it sounds like you went through an awful time. I was debating a trip to A&E earlier this week after days of no sleep and sickness. Yes hopefully I will be able to get some meds tomorrow... in view of the termination I don't see why they would have an issue with providing something

Honestly, I think it would be better to go ahead with the termination ASAP. Not only are you putting yourself through the unnecessary horror of severe sickness, but the process will be easier at 5/6 weeks than at 7/8 weeks, surely?

carriecaux · 06/09/2017 18:39

It's horrible, I'm sorry you're going through it now! I was exactly the same, I'd have probably gone to A&E otherwise because it does just become unbearable. I really think you'll be fine to get some as long as they know you're terminating. Hope you feel better soon.
