Surgical procedure with BPAS around 15/16 weeks

The baby is measuring slightly behind so I suspect it will be more like 15 weeks when I get the date through.

One doctor and one nurse have tried to persuade me to have medical management due to the risk of uterine rupture and incompetent cervix. I'll admit I am bloody scared i will fall into the bad stats for the operation as currently im always falling into bad stats 😬

Has anyone had a sugical procedure done around this gestation and found they were okay afterwards?

I had a surgical termination at 18 weeks several years ago. Similarly to you, my baby was very unwell and measured smaller than dates. It was my first pregnancy and I had a cervical stitch with my two subsequent pregnancies as my cervix measured short but it was preventative rather than there being any problems. In terms of immediate physical effects after the termination, the recovery was fine. Of course emotionally it was very hard and I still find myself in tears from time to time now, years later.

Sending you some unmumsnetty hugs and hoping it goes as well as can be managed. I didn't really read or take in any magazines etc - there wasn't much sitting around and I went home pretty soon after - although luckily DH was able to pick me up which helped. Will be thinking of you.

I am really scared of things going wrong. I've been told about the risk of cervix incompetence and uterine rupture. I have no idea what the actual stats are though.

I'm going to be completely on my own unfortunately because it's so far away and DP will be at home looking after the children. I'm going to drive up and stay in an airbnb the night before and the night after then drive home the following day.

I had to have a cervical stitch when my DD 16m after having three miscarriages and treatment for abnormal cells which caused weakening of my cervix. If you want to ask anything, I will answer the best I can

Please don't worry about things going wrong- this was my biggest fear and I've had twice (and a d and c for mmc) the stats are tiny and you're in the safest hands xx if it comforts you my last pregnancy after all these was totally uneventful and my baby was 100% well. Xx

I was in your position last year. Faced with a termination for medical reasons at 15 weeks. The hospital was really pressuring me to have a medical management but i knew I couldn't emotionally handle this.

Thankfully my wonderful GP totally agreed and said a surgical termination was the right route for me. I too was worried about scarring from this procedure but was informed the risks were very very rare. My gp said she had come across more complications from medical management (mainly retained products). Anyway I was booked into BPAS Richmond for that weekend. We had to stay at a nearby hotel the night before to make the 8.30 appt the next day. Bpas were brilliant and so understanding. They kept myself and my husband in our own waiting room (as we were the only ones there that day having a termination for medical reasons. Not that I would have judged anyone there! But I appreciated the privacy). I had tablets internally inserted 2 hours before the procedure to open up my cervix. It was uncomfortable but not at all painful. And then 2 hours later I was taken down to theatre. I got very weepy as they wheeled me in but the staff were lovely. I was sedated and when I was woken by the nurse afterwards in recovery, I thought I'd been asleep for hours. But it turns out it was less than an hour! I had to stay for another couple of hours to eat something and go to the toilet. Then husband was allowed to take me home. I had no complications and recovered physically very quickly. My periods returned exactly 28 days later.

Emotionally, I had a tough few months after and counselling really helped me through this. I'm very pleased I opted for the surgical route in such a devastating situation.

I am now 8 weeks pregnant again and praying it works out for me this time.

I hope you are given lots of care and support during this time. It's heartbreaking. But I promise you will get through it.

Hi Hun, I had a surgical termination at 15 weeks in April 2015 at my local BPAS clinic. The experience itself wasn't horrific but sadly the procedure has left me with a uterus damaged beyond repair and so any further pregnancies are almost impossible. I don't mean to scare you but Asherman's Syndrome (which is what I have) is little spoken about and I went into my termination not knowing this was a risk factor. Just something to consider before going ahead with everything, if I'd known then I wouldn't have gone ahead with the abortion. You probably won't get told about it at the clinic though as it is very rare although a possibility. Good luck anyway :)
