Morning after pill

I know I am pregnant and that conception was nine days ago. I don't want to be pregnant. I stupidly didn't get the MAP, I just held on and hoped. It had been my understanding that the MAP is only effective up to 72 hours after conception, but now I am reading that it's more like 5 days.

I can't get the MAP until tomorrow. Can anyone please tell me if there is there any chance at all that it could still work and might be worth a try, 10 days after conception?

This says emergency contraception is available for a maximum of 5 days after unprotected sex:

No. It's too late at that point.

If it's only been 9 days though are you sure you're pregnant? That would be very very early to get a positive test.

ahatlikeprincessmarina · 04/06/2017 07:35

I haven't had a positive test yet but I am 100% sure as this is my 5th pg. Queasiness, crampiness, period not starting, and just a subtle feeling of my uterus kind of drawing upwards. I know I'm pg –this happened last year and I had a medical termination. And I'm going to have to go through the whole damn thing again. Sad

I took the MAP within 24 hours and it didn't work (which in hindsight I'm eternally grateful for - most of the time). I'd be amazed if it worked for you know.

ahatlikeprincessmarina · 04/06/2017 07:44

Thanks. Just thought I'd clutch at some straws there. Really gutted. The condom seemed to be intact but there was a small amount of leakage at the entrance to my vagina. I feel so stupid and embarrassed that this has happened again. Sad

The window of efficacy of EllaOne is longer than that of Levornelle, but I'm afraid you are too late for both forms of MAP.

Also you would be too late for an emergency coil fitting (5 days after unprotected sex or within 5 days of ovulation).

If you are PG (and despite having symptoms, you cannot be sure yet) then you still do have plenty of time for a medical termination. you won't be able to arrange it until you've tested positive, so that's several days waiting. I hope you can find a way to get yourself into some sort of denial (IYSWIM, I'm sure there's a better way of putting it but I can't come up with it right now) rather than it being wall-to-wall stress.

It's too late for the MAP so you will need to get an abortion and use more reliable contraception.

AliceThrewTheFookingGlass · 04/06/2017 08:21

The MAP only prevents a pregnancy. It doesn't end an existing one.

ahatlikeprincessmarina · 04/06/2017 08:29

Yep, understood, Alice. Thanks. I know it's not recommended but I am thinking of trying to buy the pills for medical termination online. I went through this last summer and remember the procedure clearly. Just want it all over with. I believe Women on Web are reputable.

Please don't buy them online; you don't know what you are getting. You could end up really hurting yourself and then you'd have endless Drs asking what you'd done and why. Flowers

VikingVolva · 04/06/2017 21:23

Don't buy online.

It's an offence in UK to procure an abortion other than within the terms of the Act and if the organisation is reputable they will not supply to UK, but will instead sighnpost you to legal providers.

If they are nit reputable, you dinmt want to swallow anything they might send you.

ahatlikeprincessmarina · 06/06/2017 09:33

Well, I feel really really daft now –I actually can't believe it but AF has arrived! I had never felt so sure about anything in my life than that I was pg. I suppose there is the thought that I might still have been, for a few days –this does seem to be the mother of all periods, so much more painful than usual, and I still feel really queasy, so who knows?

Sorry for being such a melodramatic plonker, though ... [runs away and hides]. And thank you for all the advice. Relieved is not a strong enough word Thanks

Well that's good news.
What are you going to do about contraception?
I don't think condoms are reliable enough on their own.

ahatlikeprincessmarina · 06/06/2017 09:56

Thanks, Emma–I know we need to make some different choices. We have been using condoms for 20 years on and off with 3 planned DC and no mishaps until last year. I have tried hormonal contraception and felt awful on everything. I think we may try one of these:

www.refinery29.uk/2017/03/143014/non-hormonal-contraception-app

but will also have a serious talk about vasectomy. I know DH isn't keen and tbh I don't love the sound of the risk factors either, but it's a case of the least bad option, I know ...

OP posts:
NameChange30 · 06/06/2017 20:45

Yes I've heard about the app, it works by tracking temperature doesn't it? I think I would be nervous about using the app by itself, maybe you could avoid PIV on fertile days and still use condoms on the other days?

There is also the diaphragm or the copper coil, have you tried or considered either of those?

I do think the risks of vasectomy are often overstated. BPAS have useful info on the risks here. For example, only 1-2% get chronic pain. But it is your DH's choice, of course. And even if he does decide to get one, you'll still need to use other contraception until he gets the all clear.

ahatlikeprincessmarina · 07/06/2017 08:41

To be honest the thought of the coil freaks me out a bit. I know it's irrational but I don't want my cervix prised open and a metal and plastic device placed semi-permanently in my uterus. My legs start crossing just at the thought Shock. I know it's a great option for many people but it's just not for me. I will take a look at the diaphragm though –v retro, but a possibility! Thanks for that page about vasectomies too, that is useful.
