i'm 28+5 wks pg and have been having scans every 4 weeks as i had a stillbirth last year. i had my last scan on friday and was diagnosed with polyhydramnios- too much amniotic fluid. i've been to the hospital daily since for CTG's ( which have all been normal). i have also had a gloucouse tolerance test to rule out diabetes and the result from that came back normal. i'll still be having daily baby-cardiac monitoring until i see the consultant again on friday. i have also been given steroids to help with the baby's lung development in case i go into labour early.

physically, i feel great and this was a real shock when they told me of this complication. obviously, i'm worried having lost my baby last year prematurely.

has anyone else had experiences of this condition?
did you deliver early?
if, diabetes wasn't a factor, were you given any other reasons why you had too much fluid?
sorry for all the questions but i'd love to hear from anyone who has experienced this condition.

Dear Brookstone,

I am now 40+6 and have had polyhydramnios since 32weeks I am well over the 95th centile with an estimated 9.5lbs baby! There are several reasons for increased liquor

  1. Diabetes my GTT was also normal.
  2. Problems with babies kidneys/Bladder/GIT but they would have checked this when they identified Poly on the scan. 3.Baby just likes a large pool!! There can be problems as your bump will feel tighter and look large. I have felt fab so asked them to stay away. The only thing they may do is induce you early but this would be more to do with your previous history. I hope this is helpful and do hope this pregnancy goes well.

Hi Brookstone. I'm so sorry to hear about your stillbirth.
I had a couple of fluid leaks in my last pregnancy, following the miscarriage of one twin. There was still plenty of fluid left throughout the pregnancy and the surviving twin is fine (now 14 months). I wonder if I had too much fluid.

My neighbour had too much fluid so was admitted at 40 weeks so they could keep an eye on her (the hosp was 20 miles away!) she went to 42 weeks before they induced her and all is well - her dd is just about to have her first birthday.

meant to add good luck!

My aunt had polyhdramnios. The hard part was she was on mandatory bedrest from about 7 months, in addition to being huge. She didn't have diabetes; don't think there was a reason. Delivered around 38 weeks, spontaneous, straightforward birth, baby absolutely fine. The hardest part was the enforced bedrest.

Seems to me my step-sister had the same condition... Not diabetic, & went 2 weeks overdue!

Good luck.

Hi,
I too had a similar experience. Lost DS1 at 33 weeks, still birth. Then polyhydramnios with DS2. Right from the start I was 9+ cm larger than dates. Due to this, and because of the inexplicable loss of our first child, I had scans every 4 weeks up to 24 then every 2 weeks there after. My GTT?s all came back normal, ( 4 in all), but I was still referred to the Diabetic pre natal clinic. Daily blood monitoring showed a different story. I did in fact have ?border-line? gestational diabetes.
DS2 was born by caesarean section at 34 weeks, a healthy 5lb 4oz. He has just celebrated his first birthday (last Saturday)

thanks everyone for all your words of encouragement! i feel much more reassured now. vala, especially glad to hear of your postitive outcome especially after the loss of your first son. hope your ds2 had a very happy first birthday.
