Very confused from hospital advice

I was recently rushed into hospital with severe abdo pain in my right side...you can imagine what was going through my head at 24weeks.
Turns out everything is fine with the baby, thank god for that, but apparantly where i had my appendix out aged 10 the scar tissue has healed in a weird way. The doctor called it "a cobweb like effect known as adhesions" anyway as DD is growing the adhesions are snapping off and stretching causing serious amounts of pain.
I was told to not stand for too long, not do any streching excercise and try not to put on lots of weight as this will cause even more pain than necessary in the 6th month. However, the midwife told me that i need to be putting on weight as im not at the right weight yet.

So now im completley confused about what to do.

You poor thing - you must have been frantic. Very glad that all is OK with baby.
Have they done a growth scan to see if your baby is measuring OK? If they have just "decided" that you are not putting on enough weight and/or are measuring small, then maybe suggesting a growth scan would determine whether your baby is small, or you're just carrying small. Whether you do or do not actually need to eat more I would have thought would depend on how the baby measures. If baby is small, then you may still need to put on weight. I presume that the MW advice was given to you before this hospital episode? In which case I'd go back to the MW and talk to her, letting her know what the consultant recommended, and if she insists that you put on weight, but they haven't done a growth scan, then suggest that they do one? From my own experience, I was told by my MW that I was measuring small by 2 weeks, I'm not weighing that much at the moment, and my pre-pregnancy BMI was low. But the growth scan showed that baby was bang on average for all measurements. What I'm trying to say is that fundal measurements and subjective assessments of how much you "should" weigh can be red herrings and irrelevant to what is actually going on.

You might find that taking it easy and not stretching, etc is enough to help with the pain.

Good luck!

they did do a scan said the DD was growing perfectly, but probably wasnt helping things by being a very active baby. I think its reassuring knowing shes enjoying herslef in there. The MW did say this before the scan so i think i'll bring up next week at my 25 week appointment and just try not to over eat even though all these bbq's are very tempting.

It's just being in pain most of the time as its prime time for baby growth is, excuse the pun, a pain in the backside.

I would listen to the doctor and not the midwide about putting on weight - sounds like what she is saying is nonsense. All women put on different amounts of weight in pg. Your baby will gain the amount of weights it needs, and weighs very little still at 24 weeks. Most of the weightgain is your uterus, amniotic fluid, additional blood volume, breasts, etc., and you don't need huge stores of fat - the baby will take the nourishment it needs from you. I had hardly gained any weight at 24 weeks (maybe 2-3kg) and was a light-weight to begin with, caught up by the end of the pregnancy when I gained about 9kg total, and had a very healthy DS who is now 75th centile height and weight. Good luck and hope all goes well.
